Rory McIlroy was the 2025 Irish Open champion, backing up what he did in 2016 when he won his first Irish Open. Those two wins have come on parkland courses, but he, like so many Irish players, has a rich pedigree on links golf courses, so it won’t be a shock to see him put on a show in front of a fired-up Irish crowd following McIlroy around the Co. Clare course. His second consecutive Masters win back in April is his only win on either the PGA or DP World Tours this year, but he has had six other top-10 finishes this year and was in good form over the last two events of the FedEx Cup in August.

The Scottish Ryder Cup star has had six top-10 finishes in 2026, including a T3 position at the Scottish Open, where he topped the greens in regulation stats for the week. He is another who should have no fear about playing links golf, with the 30-year-old boasting wins at the Scottish Open and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on his career resume so far. He has three top-10 finishes in Open Championships to his name, also including two at Royal Portrush in 2019 and 2025.

Another home favourite that will draw plenty of support around Doonbeg is Shane Lowry. The 2019 Open champion has not had the greatest year of his career, but his fans will hope that a return to home shores and the roars of the home crowd may inspire the Clara man to a big performance as he looks to end a four-year barren spell of tournament victories. His last solo win came at the 2022 PGA Championship at Wentworth when he held off McIlroy and Rahm for the win. He has had two top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour in 2026, but they came at the start of the year, and his last appearance on the course was a disappointing end to his PGA Tour year when he finished T-52 at the FedEx St Jude Championship.
