The oldest golf competition in the world returns to Portrush this July, as Royal Portrush hosts the 2025 Open Championship. Many of the world’s top golfers, including Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry, will tee off on the Antrim coast, all vying for one of the most iconic prizes in sport—the Claret Jug.
Ahead of the The Open 2025, we’ll highlight the key contenders, explore the latest betting odds, and share our 2025 British Open prediction. We'll also provide Open betting tips to help guide your wagers.
⛳ 2025 Open Championship
There are plenty of contenders in the field ahead of the 2025 Open Championship, but our prediction is for Scottie Scheffler to claim his first Claret Jug, bringing him just one US Open title away from completing a career Grand Slam. Scheffler, the world’s No. 1 ranked player, has already won three times on the PGA Tour this season, including a third major at the 2025 PGA Championship, which he won by five shots with a score of -11.
The 29-year-old also leads the PGA Tour in scoring average this year with a mark of 68.5 and has recorded the most top-10 finishes, with 11. He is tied for 4th in average putts per round at 1.710 and leads the tour in strokes gained off the tee and from tee to green. Scheffler has also proven to be one of the best scramblers on tour, ranking 3rd in overall scramble success at 68.33%, and boasting a 66.99% success rate when scrambling from the rough, 4th best on tour. These attributes should serve him well amid the unpredictable conditions of a links course at Portrush.
While it may seem like a safe or even dull Open Championship prediction, Scheffler's current form and consistency make it a strong one. He has recorded two top-10 finishes in his last four Open appearances, suggesting he’s growing more comfortable with links golf, a worrying sign for his rivals.
Many of Ireland’s best betting sites agree, with several making Scheffler the favourite to lift the Claret Jug on July 20th. DirectionBet have listed 5.5 odds on Scheffler emerging victorious after four gruelling rounds.

Here are the latest British Open betting odds for the 2025 Men’s tournament. Note that these odds are subject to change as the event draws nearer.
1️⃣ Rory McIlroy
The home favourite will be eager to return to Northern Ireland and capture a sixth major championship, along with a second Claret Jug. His last outing at the Open in Portrush ended in disappointment, with the 36-year-old missing the cut.
No doubt, he’ll be looking to make amends and give the home crowd something to cheer about across the four days. His form since completing his career Grand Slam with a Masters win has been inconsistent, but perhaps returning home free of that pressure could inspire McIlroy to deliver the kind of magic Irish fans are hoping for this July.
Back Rory McIlroy as The Open Golf 2025 winner at:
2️⃣ Jon Rahm
Rahm has recorded three top-20 finishes in the year’s first three majors, finishing T-14 at the Masters, T-8 at the PGA Championship, and T-7 at the US Open. He previously finished T-11 at Royal Portrush, despite being T-8 after 54 holes, only to fall back after a +4 final round of 75.
His 2025 LIV Golf performances suggest the Spaniard is steadily rediscovering the form that helped him win the 2021 US Open and the 2023 Masters.

3️⃣ Xander Schauffele
Schauffele enters as the defending Open Champion, having triumphed at Royal Troon in 2024. With two majors and an Olympic gold medal to his name, he’s proven he can deliver when it counts.
Though he struggled with injury earlier this year, his best form has surfaced at the majors. Given his track record, it would be unwise to discount him from making a serious attempt to defend his crown.
