The Ultimate Fighting Championship takes centre stage once again on Sunday, August 25th, with Jared Cannonier and Caio Borralho headlining an exciting fight card at UFC Vegas 96. Scheduled to take place at the iconic UFC Apex facility, this bout will take place at middleweight, with Cannonier looking to rebound from a TKO defeat to Nassourdine Imavov in June. Conversely, Borralho is unbeaten in all six of his UFC bouts and embarked on a 13-fight winning streak in MMA, and he’s the starting favourite to extend this sequence in Vegas. But what do the current odds tell us, and who’s my pick to prevail in Sin City?
Cannonier vs Borralho Betting Odds
Borralho is the heavy betting favourite to defeat Cannonier, at a current starting price of around 1.43. These odds imply a 69.93% probability of a victory for ‘The Natural’, who has won 16 of his 18 career MMA bouts and has proven himself as a supremely talented grappler. As for the 40-year-old veteran Cannonier, he can be backed as high as 2.73 to prevail, suggesting that he has just a 36.63% chance of recording an 18th MMA career triumph in Vegas. So, who do I think will prevail here, and what have Ireland’s best betting sites have to say?

Jared Cannonier to Win | 2.73 | 2.55 | 2.61 | 2.71 |

Cannonier vs Borralho Prediction
Cannonier remains an incredible and seemingly perennial middleweight contender, and to maintain a rank of fifth in the weight class is incredible given his advancing years. However, he has often flattered to deceive when competing at true world level, and while Borralho is only ranked 12th and has no title to his name, he continues to distinguish as a future middleweight champion.
Styles also make fights, of course, and it’s hard to see how Cannonier can defeat his opponent in Vegas. Sure, he typically produces a much higher punch and kick output and connects with 4.62 significant blows per minute on average (compared to just 2.91 for Borralho), but his accuracy rate of 52% is considerably lower than his opponent’s (60%).
He also absorbs more than twice as many significant blows per minute on average (4.19 vs 2.00), so attempting to close the distance on Borralho will leave him open to swift counters and powerful takedown attempts. The latter could prove to be the ultimate downfall of Cannonier, who has only won two of his 17 MMA career bouts via submission (11.76%) and averages just 0.47 falls per 15 minutes.
Borralho also has a drop accuracy and 63% and fall defence of 76%, which can in part be attributed to his technical ability and powerful frame. Make no mistake: he is two inches taller than his opponent and typically weighs in at 84.35 kg (he has even fought at light-heavyweight earlier in his career). What’s more, he has a slightly longer leg reach, so Cannonier may struggle even if he does attempt to maintain distance.
While ‘Tha Killa Gorilla’ is incredibly tough and arguably the heaviest hitter in the middleweight division, his front foot fight style and relative lack of defence is tailormade for an in-form Borralho. So, I am picking the latter to earn a decisive (if hard-fought) victory, probably via unanimous decision or a submission in the later rounds.
My Prediction: 🏆Caio Borralho to Win
Jared Cannonier Form
While the experienced and durable Cannonier may have turned 40 in March, he’s still ranked fifth in the UFC Middleweight rankings. He was also arguably unlucky in defeat against Nassourdine Imavov on June 8th, as despite being stopped via TKO in the fourth round, he was upright and defending himself intelligently at the time.
Prior to this, ‘Tha Killa Gorilla’ had been embarked on a two-fight winning streak, earning a hard-fought split decision over Sean Strickland at a UFC Fight Night before unanimously outpointing Marvin Vettori on June 17th, 2023. These victories followed his unanimous decision loss to the excellent Israel Adesanya at UFC 276, which had seen him compete for the middleweight title for the first time.
Of course, Cannonier’s strength is also his biggest weakness, as his immense work rate and desire to pressure opponents also leaves him open to counter strikes and takedown attempts. He’s always looking to close the distance and throws a huge volume of punches, landing 250 significant strikes in his dominant win over Marvin Vettori alone last summer.
Ultimately, Cannonier is a tough brawler with one of the hardest punches in the middleweight class. To this end, he has won 63% of his UFC bouts via knockout or TKO, while 10 of his 17 MMA career victories have been achieved by the same methods (58.82%). So, he’s a threat to any fighter and cannot be discounted despite his advancing years.
Caio Borralho Form
‘The Natural’ is nine years Cannonier’s junior, while his MMA career record of 16 wins in 18 bouts (88.88%) stands comparison with the best. He has only been defeated once in any MMA promotion since his debut in December 2014, with this administered by João Carvalho in just his second bout.
He was signed to the UFC in the autumn of 2021, after winning two bouts in four weeks while competing in Dana White's Contender Series. Since then, he has won six consecutive bouts and earned two ‘Performance of the Night’ awards, the most recent of which came after he stopped Paul Craig in just two rounds at UFC 301 in May.
This was supposed to be Borralho’s toughest test to date, but he dominated the opening round before a flurry of punches resulted in a devastating knockout. This was a reminder of Borralho’s own punching power and accuracy, as while only five of his 16 MMA career wins have come by way of knockout (31.25%), he’s incredibly precise when landing combinations.
Borralho is also a far more rounded fighter than Cannonier, submitting 25% of his opponents and earning 44% of his total wins via decision. His grappling is obviously superior too, with an impressive drop accuracy and tight fall defence enabling him to dominate on the ground and fight on his own terms.
Cannonier vs Borralho Betting Offers
This will be a fourth straight main event for Cannonier, who remains an incredibly tough and durable fighter. However, Borralho is clearly a rising star at middleweight, and one of the best balanced and physically imposing fighters in the division.
