The snooker season is drawing to a close, but there are still some big trophies up for grabs, with one of these being the Welsh Open. This ranking tournament will be played between the 12th and the 18th of February at the Venue Cymru in Llandudno. In this betting guide, I am going to give you my prediction as to who I think will lift the Ray Reardon trophy.
🎱 Welsh Open Betting Preview
The qualifiers for the 2024 Welsh Open took place between the 25th and 27th of January at the Barnsley Metrodome in Barnsley, with 64 players qualifying for the main event. Judd Trump and Ronnie O'Sullivan, who both qualified for this competition and are in great form, decided to pull out for different reasons, and they were replaced by Duane Jones and Alfie Davies, who are both Welsh amateurs.
All matches before the quarter-finals will be the best of 7 frames, while the quarter-finals with be the best of 9, the semi-finals will be the best of 11, and the final will be the best of 17. This competition has a knockout format, which means that players are eliminated as soon as they have lost one match.
With O'Sullivan and Trump not participating this time around, picking a winner becomes a little bit harder as these two are currently head and shoulders above the rest. Below I am going to take a look at four players that I believe are in with a shout of winning this trophy. Under each player, you can find the outright odds that three of the best betting sites are currently offering.
1️⃣ John Higgins
John Higgins won the Championship League invitation in 2022 and 2023, but this is all that he has lifted in the previous two seasons of seasons of snooker, and he is yet to get off the mark in this current season. For someone of his ability, not having reached a final in over two years really is not good enough, and he will not have a better chance than to break this duck at the 2024 Welsh Open - a competition that he has won a record five times. He is now the favourite to win after Mark Selby was unexpectedly knocked out by Aaron Hill, while, as mentioned above, Trump and O'Sullivan opted out of playing.

2️⃣ Mark Allen
While Higgins has not won much over the previous two seasons, Allen has managed to pick up a total of five trophies - he won the 2022 Northern Ireland Open, the 2022 UK Championship, the 2023 World Grand Prix, the 2023 Snooker Shoot Out, and the 2023 Champions of Champions. This has been a hit-and-miss season for the Northern Irishman though as he has been knocked out early in most competitions that he did not go on to win. He will fancy his chances of winning the 2024 Welsh Open as he will not fear anyone who is left.

3️⃣ Barry Hawkins
Barry Hawkins has only won five titles in his snooker career, and one of these came during this 2023/24 season as he won the 2023 European Masters. There is no doubt that Hawkins is a talented snooker player, but he is just playing at a time when there a handful of players that are quite a bit better than him. However, when he looks at the remaining players that are left in this competition, he will see no reason why he cannot go on and lift his sixth title.

4️⃣ Luca Brecel
The Belgian Bullet has four ranking titles under his belt, but the one that he will be the most proud of is the World Snooker Championship that he won in 2023. He became the very first Belgian to win this prestigious title, and his success will have given him all of the confidence to go on and win more big titles. His form has been up and down this season though, and he has only made it to one final, which was the Shanghai Masters.

📊 Welsh Open Winners
When you are thinking about placing a wager on any kind of sports event, it is wise to check out the previous winners before you put down your bet. Some players excel when it comes to particular events and always seem to play their best. For example, you would not bet against Ronnie O'Sullivan winning the Shanghai Masters. So, with this in mind, below are the results of the most recent Welsh Open snooker finals:
Year | Winner | Runner-up | Final Score |
---|---|---|---|
2016 | Ronnie O'Sullivan | Neil Robertson | 9-5 |
2017 | Stuart Bingham | Judd Trump | 9-8 |
2018 | John Higgins | Barry Hawkins | 9-3 |
2019 | Neil Robertson | Stuart Bingham | 9-7 |
2020 | Shaun Murphy | Kyren Wilson | 9-1 |
2021 | Jordan Brown | Ronnie O'Sullivan | 9-8 |
2022 | Joe Perry | Judd Trump | 9-5 |
2023 | Robert Milkins | Shaun Murphy | 10-3 |
As you can see, from the previous eight editions of the Welsh Open, there have been eight different winners. However, John Higgins is the most successful player in the history of this event, which dates back to 1992, as he has won it five times and finished as the runner-up on two occasions.
🏆 Welsh Open Prediction
From the four players that I mentioned earlier, it is hard to choose a winner because either one can go on and lift the trophy on their day. However, I am going to back Higgins to win the title for the sixth time. Why is this? Well, he is playing some quality stuff at the moment and looks like he is in the groove. He will be hard for any of the remaining players to beat and will be quietly confident about being able to stamp his dominance on this competition once more.
My Welsh Open Prediction: John Higgins to win.
⭐ Welsh Open Betting Tips
I shall now give you some other betting tips for this 2024 Welsh Open. Check these out before you go ahead and make any wagers with free bets or your own money.
Bet on a 147
If snooker is a new sport for you, then a 147 is when a player manages to pot 15 reds, 15 blacks, and the yellow, green, brown, blue, pink, and black during one visit to the table. Despite what O'Sullivan says, it is not that easy a feat to achieve, so there will often be some good odds for one to be scored. One great thing about this market is the fact that you do not need to try and predict the player who will hit it.
Top Tip 1: Some of the best players might have opted not to take part in this tournament while some other quality players have already been knocked out, but there is still plenty of talent left on display. Thus, it would not surprise me if a 147 was hit between now and the end of the competition on the 18th of February.
Who Are the Dark Horses
The great thing about snooker is that some relatively unfavoured player can come from nowhere and lift the title - we saw this when Brecel won his first world title last year. Players are dropping like flies, but there are still those players that can be considered to be the dark horses.
Top Tip 2: If you do not like the odds that are being offered for Higgins to go on and win the Welsh Open and fancy a flutter on a dark horse, then I would recommend that you consider placing a bet on Gary Wilson. He is one of those players that definitely has plenty of talent but has not done the most with it. Nevertheless, he has been playing well this week and will be buoyed by his close win over Lisowski to book himself a spot in the last 16.
The Highest Break
Another entertaining market that snooker betting fans can put their hard-earned money on is the player who will go on and make the highest break in the whole event. Due to the difficulty of betting such a wager right, there will often be some entertaining odds on offer. There is a £5000 jackpot awarded to the players that make the highest break, so players have an extra incentive.
Top Tip 3: When it comes to the 2024 Welsh Open highest break, I would recommend that you consider betting on Allen or Higgins. Both of these players are immaculate break builders and rarely give their opponents a second chance when they are in among the balls. It would not surprise me if one of these players ended up walking away with the extra £5000 on offer.
