Match prediction 1 of 15 of our Six Nations betting series.

wales-vs-ireland-rugby-coat-of-arms-logo wales-vs-ireland-rugby-coat-of-arms-logo

The Northern Hemisphere premier international rugby competition, the Guinness Six Nations Championship is only a few weeks away, and Wales vs Ireland will open the competition in dramatic style. The first match will be on Saturday, the 4th February at the Principality Stadium, Cardiff, with all of the action kicking off at 2.15 p.m. local time.

The referee officiating will be Karl Dickson from England. Karl played professional rugby for Bedford Blues and Harlequins before making the transition from player to referee. He made his refereeing debut in last year's Six Nations competition when he took charge of the Scotland vs France test.

All in all, I think we can expect fireworks from this first match, but whom do most betting sites have as their favourites? Will we see Wales turn around their bad luck from last year or will Ireland storm to yet another win against their home-nations rivals?

🐉 Wales Overview

✔️ Wales Recent Form

There is a lot to analyse about Wales's performance from last year: a lot of good and a lot of- well, let's just say that the glory days may well be behind the Men in Red. Let's take a look at the highs and the lows of their 2022 and see if they will be up to snuff for this Wales vs Ireland test.

⬅️ Wales Six Nations 2022 Form

Wales started 2022 with a less-than-impressive Six Nations run, winning only one game out of four. Their opening match, a 29-7 thumping from Ireland, very much set the tone for the rest of the tournament for the Welsh, eventually leading to an Italian upset that saw glory slip away by a single point. Overall, last year's Six Nations was not something by which we can judge a potential show-stopping performance from the Dragons.

☀️ Wales Summer Internationals 2022 Form

The summer saw the Welsh off to the sunnier climes of South Africa. There were two games against the Māori All Blacks to start, which ended even-stevens at 1-1 - arguably not a bad result, given these games were essentially warm-ups. In the prime of the three-test tour, however, Wales only scraped the one win against the current Rugby World Cup Champions, the Springboks, ultimately falling short, 2-1. It seems, then, that the only highlight for the tour may have been literal rather than figurative: the summer sunshine.

🍂 Wales Autumn Nations Series 2022 Form

Just when it may have felt that the stiletto blade of bad results couldn't slip any deeper between the shoulder blades of the Welsh dragon, the Autumn Nations Series thrice twisted the knife, with defeats against New Zealand, against Georgia, and against Australia. At least Wales managed a murmur of joy with a 20-13 win against Argentina to drag them from total humiliation.

☘️ Ireland Overview

✔️ Ireland Recent Form

Ireland have a lot about which they can boast from 2022. Without further ado, let's dive into last year's results to see why the Irish may be more than just quietly confident, going into this game.

⬅️ Ireland Six Nations 2022 Form

Ireland may not have picked up the ultimate prize of the Six Nations title and a Grand Slam win, having fallen short against France in the second round, but they were at least comfortably able to secure second place overall, also claiming the Triple Crown after wins against Wales, against England, and against Scotland. I think the Irish will feel a little stung over the final result but that they have a whole host of positives to take away from their 2022 Six Nations performances.

☀️ Ireland Summer Internationals 2022 Form

The Irish had a historical time against the All Blacks in the summer, snatching their series 1-2 and becoming only the fifth-ever team to win a tour against the Kiwis on New Zealand soil. As far as results go, this was something special and is one of the reasons that the bookies think Ireland are strong favourites both for the Six Nations 2023 and for the Rugby World Cup later in the year.

🍂 Ireland Autumn Nations Series 2022 Form

It was an excellent Autumn Nations Series for Ireland last year, winning all three of their matches - even putting the Springboks to the sword in a tense 19-16 clash. There's not really more that needs saying about a superb undefeated streak, per se, but it certainly looks like a good indicator of good things to come from Ireland in their upcoming match.

❗ Updates about Ireland Rugby

🕵️ Wales vs Ireland Six Nations Prediction Winner

In terms of the quality of rugby of both sides, this match-up is something David-and-Goliath-esque. Ireland look to have this in the bag from the opening whistle; they have last year's result on their side, a far more impressive run of results to show for 2022, and total dominance in the world rankings. Moreover, Ireland's Head Coach, Andy Farrell has had time on his side to be able to forge a strong set-up with his team, whereas Wales look all over the place at the moment, considering they have only just reappointed Warren Gatland as Wayne Pivac's replacement - the former having short notice to put together anything of mention for this year's competition. It would be fantastic for rugby fans to see Wales wage a worthy fight in this Six Nations opener, but all things considered, I can only see Ireland walking away with their heads held high.

Prediction for the Wales vs Ireland Winner? Ireland to win.

💶 Wales vs Ireland Betting Tips

I think the away side are going to give Wales a kicking in this match, so I would say that odds on Ireland to win at 1.37 are actually very competitive. For those that may be interested in lengthening their options, however, I would say that it may be worth considering putting a handicap bet on Ireland to win (-6.5 points) at 1.87 odds, given that I can see the Men in Green leaving the Welsh with a deficit of at least a converted try.
