Prediction accuracy 2024: ✔️ 66.67%.
Our middle game for Saturday, the 16th of March is the Six Nations round-five game of Ireland v Scotland. Kick-off will take place at 4.45 p.m.
The referee for this one will be Matthew Carley, with assistance coming from Karl Dickson and Christophe Ridley. Marius Jonker will take up the position of the TMO.
Ireland and Scotland come into this round with two shock losses, but with this game offering the opportunity to win the competition for the Irish and a chance for redemption for the Scottish, I expect this to be a hell of a clash. Who will win? Let us jump into my Ireland v Scotland prediction.

🔍 Ireland v Scotland Winner Prediction
With a lot at state for both team, I expect a big fight from both side. Which team will deliver the goods and which will be left in the dust? Let us task a look at some of the key indicators.
History
Ireland and Scotland have played each other at rugby union in 141 matches, with Ireland winning 70 times, Scotland winning 66 times, and five matches having been drawn. That seems 50:50 to me, but then recent performances such as last year's Six Nations fixture and the World Cup game both ended 7-22 and 36-24 respectively in Ireland's favour. It seems history, at least in recent times, points to an Irish win.
Last Performances
Ireland Matches | Result |
---|---|
France v Ireland | 17-38 |
Ireland v Italy | 36-0 |
Ireland v Wales | 31-7 |
England v Ireland | 23-22 |
Scotland Matches | Result |
---|---|
Wales v Scotland | 26-27 |
Scotland v France | 16-20 |
Scotland v England | 30-21 |
Italy v Scotland | 31-29 |
Three wins and one loss compared to two wins and two losses is enough to make this look like this could just go in Ireland's favour.
World Rankings
The world rankings would have you believe there is a gulf in glass, with Ireland in second in the world and Scotland in sixth. That is another tick for an Irish win.
Home Advantage
Ireland will be happy going into this game with the home advantage, and after a disappointment last week, this could be a key boost that Andy Farrell's men need in order to pick themselves up after an ego knock.
Weather
12°C with cloud may seem mild for the supporters, but neither team should struggle in such conditions. This is a pretty neutral factor and should not affect the game.
Game Play Styles
Ireland continue to play very physical rugby and excel in the rucks. On average, they manage to get through 100 rucks per game at no more than three seconds a time. This is something with which most opposition can not contend.
Scotland do have a good set of forwards in their squad, but we will need to see more of them being physical around the park in order to keep up. With their open play, however, they will have a good opportunity to threaten the Irish defensive line, so I think this will be an interesting contest.
On game play, I would have to give things to Ireland by a whisker.
Winner Summary
Ireland wanting to secure back-to-back Six Nations titles and having the advantage of playing at home will give them great confidence at the Aviva. I believe the Scots will be a classy and entertaining game, but I can not see past the home side taking the big prize by 12 points.
🏉 Ireland to win by 12 points!
✔️ Ireland v Scotland Betting Tips
1️⃣ Match Winner: Ireland to Win
Despite their performance last week, I am confident Ireland will go on to victory this time around. Does that mean I will be betting on Andy Farrell's men? Potentially, but only perhaps because this is the penultimate chance to have a flutter on the Six Nations this year. Other than for that reason, I think odds of Ireland to win at 1.10 at LegendPlay Sports are too short for my liking.
2️⃣ Handicap Winner: Ireland to Win (-11.5)
There is not a lot of room for error with my tip for this one, but as I believe that the Men in Green will do the business by 12 points, I am going to stick my neck out and say that I would be tempted to have a go on Ireland to win (-11.5) at 1.50 at LegendPlay Sports. This will be a big game, however, so make sure if you do fancy betting a few cents that you are cautious about what you are willing to gamble.
