Prediction accuracy 2024: ✔️ 66.66%.
Round two of the Six Nations Championship 2024 comes to a close with Ireland v Italy at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. The match will take place on Sunday, the 11th of February. Kick-off will be at 3 p.m.
Taking charge of this one will be Pierre Brousset (FFR). He will be assisted on the touch lines by Mathieu Raynal (FFR) and Luc Ramos (FFR). Completing the French refereeing line-up will be TMO Eric Gauzins.
Rugby fans will have this match down as a foregone conclusion, but with Italy's close performance against England last week, could this be more of a game than you may initially expect? There is only one way to find out! Let's blow the starting whistle on my Ireland v Italy prediction.

🔍 Ireland v Italy Winner Prediction
The cynical may thing this should be a shorter section of my predictions, but I will give both teams my due diligence. Let us take a look at the key predictors going into Sunday.
- History: Ireland have played Italy 36 times: Ireland have won 32 and Italy have won. In both sides' last clash against each other in the Six Nations, the Irish cruised to a 20-34 win on Italian soil. In a Rugby World Cup warm-up game in August, Ireland were again dominant, picking up a 16-point victory, 33-17 History easily points to a win for the Irish.
- Last round performance: France v Ireland ended up a hell of the match, with the Irish flying out of the gate at the first whistle and keeping up the pressure till the last. Andy Farrell will certainly have been pleased at a scoreboard of 17-38, and there were a lot of excellent ideas from the game that they will hope to carry over to this Sunday. Italy v England, surprisingly, was more of a spectacle than most would have expected from the continental Europeans, but nevertheless, Italy were still held off to a 24-27 loss against a rebuilding England squad. This speaks volumes about recent form and I believe points to a comfortable win for Ireland.
- World rankings: This is no contest. The oracle of rugby has Ireland in second and biting at the heels of South Africa; Italy are a world away in 11th. This is yet another sign of an Irish win.
- Home advantage: The Men in Green will always give a rousing welcome to any team who visits the Aviva Stadium. Andy Farrell's men will be backed to the hilt with Ireland's Call, and I think this will help Ireland do the business on Italy.
- Weather: The forecast is 4°C with clouds and spotty sunshine. The weather might offer the Irish a slight advantage.
- Game play: Ireland are known for their hard running plays and are arguably the world's best team when it comes to rucking - a weapon to which they will default on Sunday in order to suck in defenders and create great space on the wings. The Italians are a little tricky to predict for how they will play at present and we are still awaiting what the new Head Coach will bring to the table as his preferred game plan. We can note, however, that work seems to have gone into beefing up their set pieces, but overall, styles of game play seem to show Ireland should have an easy run.
I really do not see this match being much of a game. Ireland will want to put Italy to the sword and show the other teams why they deserve to be the Six Nations 2024 champions. This will be a masterclass of rugby from Andy Farrell's men that will leave to at least a 40-point difference on the scoreboard.
🏉 Ireland to win by 40 points!
✔️ Ireland v Italy Betting Tips
1️⃣ Match Winner: Ireland to Win
I think the bookies that have given odds for an Irish win, by the usual standard of the odds they offer for top-five world teams against Italy, have been rather generous. Having said that, the best option is Ireland to win at 1.004 at Betway, and who is going to have a punt on that? Sorry, bookies! Not me.
2️⃣ Handicap Winner: Ireland to Win (-36.5)
My thinking is that Ireland are on to smash at least a 40-point win, so I would be comfortable having a flutter on Ireland to win (-36.5) at 2.10 at LegendPlay Sports. That would mean just over twice your money should the Irish win by 37 points or more. Let us remember, however, that this is rugby and the unexpected is the only thing you can take for granted; therefore be sensible with what you are willing to bet.
