Prediction accuracy 2024: ✔️ TBD.
With a momentous 2023 and the Christmas period over, here we are again for the Six Nations 2024. The first match of the competition will be played between France and Ireland on Friday, the 2nd of February 2024 at the Orange Vélodrome, Marseille. Kick-off will be at 8 p.m. GMT.
The match official for this encounter will be Englishman Karl Dickson, with Matthew Carley and Jordan Way as assistants and Ben Whitehouse as TMO. An interesting fact about Karl is that he owns, with his brother Lee, the website Outofthescrum, a rugby platform for professional advice on drills for coaches and players alike.
For me, this is going to be a tumultuous affair - the best match of the Six Nations 2024. I believe the winner of this match will go on to win this year's competition. If we look at recent history in the championship, we can see that in 2022 when the two sides played in France, France won; in 2023 when the two sides played in Ireland, Ireland won. Does that mean it is the turn of the French again this year? Let's dig into that idea with my France v Ireland prediction.

🔍 France v Ireland Winner Prediction
After failing to achieve the ultimate prize at last year's Rugby World Cup in France, the home side will be looking to get back to winning ways. They will see this as the match that will win the Six Nations Championship 2024. It will be a tough fight to come away with a first win, however. Let's break down how things may play out.
- History: France and Ireland have played a total of 102 rugby test matches since their first meeting in 1909: France winning 59 of those matches, Ireland claiming 36 wins, and there having been 7 drawn matches. Past performance leans to a French win.
- World rankings: These always give you food for thought when predicting a match winner. Currently, Ireland are second and France are in fourth. Contrary to the history, this could point to an Ireland win.
- Home advantage: As already discussed, this will be a major factor in who will win this match - the same way it has been over the last two years. On the home advantage alone, this will be a French win.
- Weather: The long-range weather forecast is 15°C with some sun and cloud. Both sides will be used to such conditions, so this should not give any advantage to either side.
- Game play: Sean Edwards' tenure has seen the French move from an erratic team who played whatever was in front of them to one of flair and great defence. The chop and top, two-man tackle will be the order of the day. Conversely, Andy Farrell has incorporated one of the best styles of play in world rugby. Ireland have learned how to win through open play, great rucking, and quality tackling. The Irish have the ability to go through several phases of play in a controlled manner, making them deadly near the try line. Which style will overcome the other? I think this information only points to a close game rather than a definite winner.
My prediction is still France to claim what will be a big W, which could lead them to the 2024 Six Nations title. They may be without the talent and leadership of Antoine Dupont, but France has strength in depth, which has been proved recently in European club rugby. I think they will do the business by three points.
🏉 France to win by 3 points!
✔️ France v Ireland Betting Tips
1️⃣ Match Winner: France to Win
With both teams in good stead, I believe it is the home advantage that makes the French viable contenders to win this match. Would I take France to win at 1.64 at 1Bet, though? I think those are satisfactory odds, given I am not the only one predicting a pleased home crowd at the Orange Vélodrome by the end of 80 minutes. I would be happy to have a punt on this option.
2️⃣ Handicap Winner: Draw (0-3)
It is rare that the bookies' odds align exactly with my school of thought, but it seems, for once, that they finally have. Controversial pick as this may be, I would be sorely tempted to have a go on the draw (0-3) at 26.00 at LegendPlay. Remember, though, any result other than the French taking the W by three points will mean you will lose your bet, so be aware of the risk involved and gamble responsibly!
