Match prediction 2 of 15 of our Six Nations betting series.

The second match of round one of the Guinness Six Nations 2023 will see England host Scotland at Twickenham on the 4th of February, with the extra bonus of the Calcutta Cup being on the line. Kick-off will be at 4.45 p.m., straight after the Wales vs Ireland match.
Our referee for this one will be the Kiwi, Paul Williams, known for his work in international tests and the Super Rugby. Paul is another player-turned-match-official and holds two firsts in New Zealand refereeing:
- He became, in 2016, the first full-time rugby referee from Taranaki on the Super Rugby panel.
- Paul was the first-ever New Zealander to officiate an All Blacks game against Australia.
Overall, I think neither team will want to hold anything back in this game. England have a lot to prove at home and under the guidance of new Head Coach, Steve Borthwick, whereas Gregor Townsend's men will be determined to do everything possible to notch up a third win in three years. Will the current Calcutta Cup champions retain their crown or will England seal the perfect start to 2023? Let's see to what the key indicators are pointing and provide some rugby betting tips for those looking to have a flutter on this weekend of the competition.

🌹 England Overview
✔️ England Recent Form
England had a woeful year in 2022. There is no other way to put it. With only five wins and one draw from 13 opportunities, the most expensive rugby outfit in the world were made to look like schoolboys playing men, time and time again. Let's recap England's form from last year.
⬅️ England Six Nations 2022 Form
England managed two of their five wins for the year early doors in the Six Nations against Italy and against Wales. Sadly for fans of the Red Rose, however, this amounted only to a third-place finish after three losses elsewhere, including a three-point gasp of despair against Scotland. All in all, form from last year's competition means it's not looking good for the English game.
☀️ England Summer Internationals 2022 Form
After another bout of disappointment in a warm-up game versus the Barbarians, England looked on track to turn around their year with a 1-2 tour win in Australia. It was thought that all seemed right in the world for England rugby fans again, but given a total points difference of only 10, it's perhaps not so surprising as to what came next in the autumn.
🍂 England Autumn Nations Series 2022 Form
England were left licking their wounds after their Autumn Nations opener against Argentina before seeming to limp through the rest of the competition. The only indisputable point of merit was in their 52-13 win against Japan, for which I will give credit where credit is due. Other than that, the Autumn Nations Series was less the glorious finish to the year for which England fans prayed and more the final nail in the coffin for former Head Coach, Eddie Jones.

✔️ Scotland Recent Form
Not a lot is often expected of the Scots on the world-rugby stage - at least not from those less acquainted with the rapture of Murrayfield - but I believe even Scottish rugby fans will be disappointed that they weren't able to scratch a couple more Ws on their record for last year. Let's take a look at how 2022 unfurled for the home-nations side.
⬅️ Scotland Six Nations 2022 Form
Similar to England's performance, Scotland only managed to grab two wins from five games in the 2022 Six Nations - the deciding factor between England's third place and the Scots' fourth place coming down to points difference. Besides an aforementioned win against the Red Rose, Scotland only managed to seal the deal once more against Italy, eventually receiving the same beatings as their English counterparts in their matches versus France and versus Ireland, with the bitter cherry of a loss against Wales on top. On their Six Nations 2022 form alone, there is not much misery to separate Scotland from their Calcutta Cup rivals.
☀️ Scotland Summer Internationals 2022 Form
Scotland seemed all set to stamp their mark on their summer tour to Argentina, but three points in the last match was all it took to gift Los Pumas a 2-1 series and all of the bragging rights. So close, yet so far for the Scots. Could this dip be the key indicator of a win for the opposition in the upcoming England vs Scotland test? Let's take a look at the Autumn Nations Series first.
🍂 Scotland Autumn Nations Series 2022 Form
It seems as much as the leaves fell in autumn, Scotland were able to turn over a new one. They still ended up with an overall even score of two wins and two losses, but a driving-off of the Fijians and a surprising 52-29 revenge win against Argentina certainly showed a resilience to Scotland that their rivals were unable to muster. Will this instead be enough of a sign of an inevitable win for Scotland?

You could argue that this game will be a difficult one to predict. Both sides are out of form, based on last year's performances; recent history says things could go either way; England are slightly ahead in the world rankings, but both teams have been up and down the rankings all last year so that there's not a lot of useful insight to be gained on that part.
I have to come down on one result, though, so I'm going with this: England to win by 10 points. What makes me so sure? I honestly think the difference will be the new management. With the departure of Eddie Jones, Steve Borthwick has taken up the mantle of England's head job. He has already cleared out and replaced a lot of the coaching staff with trusted advisors from his time at Leicester; he already has experience as part of the England coaching set-up, so he knows what it means to fans for England to deliver; and I think he will bring a new culture to the side that will bring a change in results during this Six Nations. Perhaps I am being overly optimistic about his credentials at this early stage of his tenure, but I believe he will be able to drum up enough of a fight at least for this first game and give the Scots a run for their money. As for the rest of the competition, well, watch this space!
Prediction for the England vs Scotland Winner? England to win.
💶 England vs Scotland Six Nations Betting Tips
Personally speaking, odds of England to Win at 1.19 being offered by betting sites don't float my boat. If I wanted just to bet on England vs Scotland Six Nations outright winners, I would probably consider an accumulator/bet builder of this and other games on the weekend. What piques my interest are the options for handicap betting. I think England may leave Scotland with a 10-point deficit, so I would be more interested in going for England to win (-8.5 points) at 1.63 odds.
If you wanted to go for a more out-there bet, you could consider betting on the draw. It wouldn't be my first thought, but the two sides have left themselves inseparable on the scoreboard an intriguing number of times in the past, so there is the smallest chance you could end up with 27.25 times your stake if this unusual phenomenon should occur again. As I said, though, this wouldn't be my first thought for a bet.
