England v WalesEngland v Wales

Following the opening game of the weekend, we will have England v Wales at Twickenham on Saturday, the 10th in the second round of the Six Nations Championship 2024. Kick-off will be at 4.45 p.m.

Our referee for this encounter will be James Doleman (NZ). Ben O'Keeffe (NZ) and Hollie Davidson (Sco) will be the assistants, and the TMO duties will be picked up by Brendon Pickerill (NZ).

Both teams will want the Big W, with the rivalry between the two teams ensuring this will be a very physical encounter. I am expecting no holds barred for this pistols-at-dawn clash, but which team will walk off the pitch with points to the good? Let's scrum down for my England v Wales prediction.

🔍 England v Wales Winner Prediction

Realistic fans will know that neither team are likely to be contenders for the Six Nations title: Wales have been so long in the doldrums, and England have only managed a patchwork of delightful and dismal performances. This will, however, be a hard-fought match - perhaps because when playing against the English, the Welsh seem to regather and revitalise. Let us see if the away side have a chance of spoiling the party at Twickenham.

  1. History: England and Wales have played a total of 141 matches since 1881, with England winning 68 times, Wales winning 61 times and 12 matches having been drawn. In the 2023 Six Nations Championship, England beat Wales in Cardiff, 10-20; then in the summer, both teams played home and away in the warm-up to the Rugby World Cup, both teams claiming one win apiece, 20-9 and 19-17 respectively. I would say, because of this, England look the better side to claim the win this time.
  2. Last round performance: England won their first round game in a close match against Italy in Rome, 24-27. England fielded five inexperienced players for the encounter, but it was the team's lack of discipline with the number of penalties given away that saw the English walk away with an unconvincing win. Wales lost to Scotland in Cardiff for the first time since 2002 in another close match: the final result being 26-27. Wales forgot to turn up for the first half, putting in arguably their worst display of rugby for decades and failing to make a dent on the scoreboard. Whatever Head Coach Warren Gatland said at half time obviously worked, however, and they at least managed to narrow the difference to a one-point loss. Based on last week, England may, only just, seem to be the favourite for this week.
  3. World rankings: There is not a world of difference in it, but England are still in fifth versus Wales in eighth, giving the home side more of a sense of an impending victory.
  4. Home advantage: England will be at home in Twickenham this week. It may not be the fortress it once was, but I imagine a roaring crowd will give the home side what they need. If those watching on TV could hear the fans belting out Swing Low in Rome last week, they will certainly be deafened by it this game.
  5. Weather: The weather will look to be 9°C with light rain. Both countries will be used to the conditions, so this should not give either side any advantage.
  6. Game play: Neither side seem to have established any set style of play, given that both sides are in building phases. We will have to see what both Head Coaches bring to the fore and adopt as their ways forward, so for now, very little can be taken from this predictor.

The two major factors are English discipline and the Welsh mentality. If Wales can put in the same performance as they did in the second half for the full 80 minutes this week, they will have a solid chance of getting their first win in the competition. If England can keep penalties to a minimum and capitalise on Welsh mistakes, they may come out dominant and make the best of what comes their way. I think this is going to be a close, at times scrappy match, but I think England will come out ahead by seven points.

🏉 England to win by 7 points!

✔️ England v Wales Betting Tips

1️⃣ Match Winner: England to Win

Wales will put up a good fight, but I see England keeping the home fans happy on Saturday; therefore my top match winner odds would be England to win at 1.23 at 1Bet, but I think the bookies may be too biased in the favour of England to consider having a go on this market.

2️⃣ Handicap Winner: Wales to Win (+13.5)

I think that England will only win this encounter by seven points, but I am going to go ahead and give myself a little leeway for this one and recommend Wales to win (+13.5) at 1.70 at Betway. I feel this gives a nice extra potential return over the match winner odds, albeit at greater risk, and still means that England could win the match overall up to a 13-point difference and leave you quids-in on your bet. All the same, I always say that there are no guarantees in rugby, so be sure to gamble responsibly.
