UK rugby is going through challenging times in the Premiership, with Worcester and Wasps being dropped out of the league due to not being able to pay taxes, but rugby betting fans in the home nations can at least look forward to happier times with a month of the Autumn Nations series.
As a warmup match, the Brave Blossoms, Japan have agreed to host New Zealand at the National Stadium in Tokyo. The match is scheduled for the 29th of October 2022 and will kick off at 05.30 GMT. This should be a pre-workout before the All Blacks take on Wales, Scotland, and England in November.

📜 History of Japan vs New Zealand
Four international tests have been played between Japan and New Zealand in rugby union, with the first test dating back to the 1995 World Cup in South Africa. The two sides will also now compete in the Lipovitan-D Challenge Cup in order to encourage a regular fixture. Results from the previous tests are as below:
Match | Date | Venue | Score | Winner |
---|---|---|---|---|
Japan vs New Zealand | 4th June 1995 | Free State Stadium, Bloemfontein | 17-145 | New Zealand |
New Zealand vs Japan | 16th September 2011 | Waikato Stadium, Hamilton | 83-7 | New Zealand |
Japan vs New Zealand | 2nd November 2013 | Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium, Tokyo | 6-54 | New Zealand |
Japan vs New Zealand | 3rd November 2018 | Ajinomoto Stadium, Chōfu | 31-69 | New Zealand |
Four wins from four would make any rugby fan think that New Zealand are a shoo-in for this game. I am inclined to agree. Japan have certainly proved themselves a true rugby nation over the years, but judging from past results, you wouldn't offer them more than a more credible loss against New Zealand in this round.

When was the last time you remember the All Blacks in fourth place? Compared to the glory days of Graham Henry and Steven Hansen, of winning the Rugby World Cup twice in a row, New Zealand has arguably lost some of their shine. Nevertheless, New Zealand will take their diminished fourth place over Japan's tenth, and they will be hoping an initial victory in this match will be the start in a campaign to reclaim a top-three spot.
I believe the world rankings are just another indicator that Japan are outgunned for this match. If you had to look at world rankings alone, you may consider betting on New Zealand rugby.
👨🏻💼 Coach Comparison
One of the key factors for me in determining who is my Japan vs New Zealand winner is the coaching set-up. With that in mind, let's take a look at those at the helm of each side.
🌸 Jamie Joseph
It's doubtful that there could be any result that will make the underdogs' Coach seem not up to snuff. The whole of world rugby will be expecting an All Blacks win, so the pressure is off. This will give Joseph plenty of chance to experiment with his team and build for the Rugby World Cup 2023. He has been outspoken about expecting Japan not to raise the Webb Ellis Trophy, but he has made it clear that his side should not be underestimated.
🥝 Ian Foster
The All Blacks coach has had a very up-and-down tenure so far, and he will be looking to get New Zealand rugby back to their winning ways. Foster will not be short of pressure - especially given that the Kiwi press have already outlined their top-ten favourite coaches to usurp his position - so nothing short of a decisive win against their on-paper much weaker East Asian counterparts will do.
🕵️ Our Japan vs New Zealand Prediction Winner
As sure as eggs are eggs, I'm giving this as a win for New Zealand. Will it be the huge score of the past? I don't think so. Japan have come along over the years. Nevertheless, Foster will want to re-establish the reputation of the mighty All Blacks, ready to take on the Northern Hemisphere over the following weeks.
💶 Japan vs New Zealand Betting Tips
I can't see betting on the All Blacks as fruitful. Bookies' odds are going to be short as an Icelandic night in summer. If you fancy your chances that Japan will pull off another one-off like their two-point win over South Africa in 2015, you could play the long odds, but as mentioned before, I feel this is most likely a New Zealand wrap-up.
This is one of those games that proves the benefit of handicap betting. A word to the wise, however, would be to check exactly how many points difference each bookie offers for this type of rugby betting before considering to go for it. It's always best to play things smart, and even then, remember that it's a bit of fun. Nothing in sport is guaranteed!
