💡 Free Leinster Championship Betting Tips

The 2024 Leinster Hurling Championships will kick off on the weekend of April 20th and 21st, with three matches occurring over these two days. The final is scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 8th before the All-Ireland Championships, so here are some early Leinster hurling betting tips to keep in mind!

1️⃣ Tip 1 - Back Galway to Win

Leinster giants Kilkenny and Galway have shared four of the last six provincial titles, with only Dublin and Wexford breaking their dominance in 2021 and 2019 respectively. Kilkenny have won four of these titles, although Kilkenny are the defending champions after winning a thrilling final between the two counties in June. However, Kilkenny will remain without Alan Murphy and Conor Browne for the 2024 campaign, while Galway GAA spent close to €2.5 million on improving its teams through 2023. So, I think there’s value in backing Galway to win the 2024 Leinster Championship at a current price of 2.10 with Dachbet Sports.

2️⃣ Tip 2 - Back Conor Cooney as the Top Scorer

31-year-old full forward Conor Cooney enjoyed a stellar 2022 campaign for Galway, while he has struck eight goals and an impressive 121 points in 31 Leinster Championship games. He also inspired Galway throughout 2023, although he drew a disappointing blank in the showdown with Kilkenny. Still, he remains a potent threat, and while the Leinster Province top scorer odds have yet to be released, Cooney is likely to be a competitively priced contender.

3️⃣ Tip 3 - Back Kilkenny to Win the All-Ireland Title

Both Galway and Kilkenny also offer value as potential All-Ireland winners, notwithstanding the recent dominance of Munster side Limerick. Kilkenny were more than competitive in the early stages of last year’s All-Ireland final against the Buttermilks, before being blown away in the second half. Still, they possess several big game players and won the title as recently as 2018, while they boasted five PwC Hurling All-Stars in 2023 (only Limerick had more). So, you could consider backing them as the All-Ireland winners at the competitive price of 7.50 with Betway.

⭐ Leinster Championship Hurling Betting Markets

In preparation for the 2024 Leinster Championship, it’s important to understand the most popular betting markets and types of wagers you can place in the tournament. So, here’s a breakdown of the different betting markets.

✔️ Outright Betting

Outright betting in the Leinster Championship involves predicting the tournament's ultimate winner. It pays to analyse team form, player performance, and historical data to select the team you believe will come out on the top. Odds for this type of market tend to be much smaller than you’d like, but it’s by far the easiest betting option, especially if you’re new to hurling betting.

✔️ The Over/Under Market

The Leinster Championship is home to several over/under markets, including options for fouls, cards, and total points scored during a game. In these markets, you can wager on whether the actual outcome will exceed or stay below a threshold set by the bookie. This is the type of betting that requires knowledge of the game and is great for in-play betting.

✔️ Odd/Even Final Points Total

This is a simple betting market, though slightly unusual. The bet requires you to predict whether the full-time points total will be an odd or even number. It’s an even money bet, which means there's a 50% probability of winning. This type of bet is ideal if you’re a casual punter or if you’re all in for the fun and not tangible returns.

✔️ Handicap Betting

Handicap wagering is our recommended betting market. It involves giving a virtual advantage or disadvantage to selected teams to offset the perceived variance in quality between the opposing teams. For instance, if Kilkenny is expected to beat a less fancied Antrim team in a Leinster Championship match, you can apply a -7 handicap to the defending champions. This will create odds that are longer and higher in value for Kilkenny to win without greatly compromising your odds of winning the bet.

✔️ Total Points Over/Under

The total points over/under market allows you to predict whether the cumulative points scored in a match will surpass or fall below a predetermined benchmark. Punters wager on whether the final combined score of both teams will exceed or stay under the specified threshold, providing an engaging alternative for betting enthusiasts beyond traditional match outcomes.

🏁 History of the Leinster Hurling Championships

In 1884, the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) introduced standard rules for hurling, and three years later, the first All-Ireland Senior Championship took place. The popularity of inter-club competitions that led to the tournament grew significantly, but the increase in competing teams to nine in 1888 caused significant challenges for travelling teams. To address this, the GAA established provisional championships in Leinster and Munster to create local competitions that served as challengers for the All-Ireland competition.

The first Leinster Championship was held on Sunday, June 3rd, 1888, with Dublin, Kilkenny, Laois, and Kildare battling it out for the Bob O’Keefe Cup. Kilkenny emerged as the champion of the championship, beating Dublin at Portlaoise. Kilkenny won 14 of the first 26 Leinster Championships, Dublin won 7, and Wexford backed 5 until Laois won their first title in 1914. However, the former three teams have dominated the tournament, winning 118 out of the 133 competitions contested to date. The most recent game saw Kilkenny defeat Dublin in a comfortable 1-25 to 0-19 scoreline, claiming their 73rd provincial title and second crown in a row.

📑 Leinster Championships Format

The Leinster Hurling Championship usually begins in late April or early May and finishes in June. In 2024, Round 1 is expected to be in late April and will take place every weekend until the final round in June. As usual, six teams will compete for the Championship in 2024, with four of them moving into two quarter-finals. However, the two qualifiers from 2023, Galway and Kilkenny, have automatically won their semi-final berths. They will then take on the victors of the two quarter-finals.

The two sides that make it to the Leinster Hurling Championship final will automatically qualify for the All-Ireland Championship in 2024. The winners will advance to the semi-final phase, while the runners-up will claim a quarter-final spot. The three clubs that finish third, fourth, and fifth in the Leinster Championship will enter a preliminary qualifying round for the All-Ireland competition. Here, they will compete against three equally placed teams from the Munster Championship. Four of the six teams will compete in a Round One match, while the other two will be given a bye into Round Two.

Two winners from the first round will then play the automatic qualifiers match in Round 2. The victorious teams will claim the final two All-Ireland Championship quarter-final spots. The six teams that competed in the previous year's Championship will also take part in the 2024 Leinster Championship.
