📆 When Will the Irish Derby Pretty Polly Stakes 2022 Take Place?

The third and final day of the Irish Derby is the Pretty Polly Stakes. The race got its name after Pretty Polly, a legendary horse who won 22 of the 24 races she entered. She even won 15 races in a row at one point during her career. Pretty Polly was the fifth filly in history to win the British Fillies Triple Crown in 1904 and a true Irish great, so it's only fitting that she is honoured with a race named after her. This year, the race will take place on the 26th of June at 15:45.

🔍 What to Consider When Betting on the Pretty Polly Stakes in 2022

Sir Henry Cecil holds the all-time record for Pretty Polly wins with eight, and perhaps Paddy Twomey, the Irish trainer, can get closer this year. Twomey came onto the horse-racing scene just a handful of years ago, but after a breakthrough season in 2019, he is going from strength to strength. So far in 2022, Twomey has 15 wins to his name - just a shade below his record of 19 wins last year. With just one filly, La Petite Coco, racing in the Pretty Polly Stakes, it will certainly be interesting to see if she can rise up and sprint for another win.

Here are some quick points to consider before horse racing wagering on the Pretty Polly Stakes:

  • This race isn't open to fillies and mares younger than three-years-old.
  • It's a flat race of 1m and 2f (or 2,012 metres).
  • Vincent O'Brien has been the leading trainer since 1950 with seven wins.
  • Seamie Hefferman is the only jockey to have won three times since 2010.

🏆 Pretty Polly Stakes Tips

There are a number of horses that have caught our eye. Take a look below for a quick run-down of the horses that we think have the potential to win the Pretty Polly Stakes this year.

Above the Curve is a three-year-old bay filly with just four races to her name to date. Her first race last year got her to a podium finish in third place. This year, the success is mounting with a second-place placing as well as two first-place wins, with one being her most recent race at Longchamp in the St Mark's Basilica Coolmore race. With all her races within a podium position, there will be serious pressure to perform to continue this fantastic start.

Golden Lyra is another filly with a small racing history. In her maiden race last season, she has huge success finishing first out of twelve runners. Her most recent race was on the 9th of June at the Greatwood EBF Stakes at Newbury, where she finished in second place. It will be interesting to see if the one mile and two furlongs race will be on the longer side or not for her. After such a fantastic start to her racing career, trainer William Haggas will certainly want to keep the successes mounting up.

La Petite Coco had a fantastic season last year, with four first-place finishes and one second-place finish. She will have had a rather large break of 287 days since her last race which was at the Blandford Stakes at Curragh. Her first-place wins have largely been on distances larger than that of the Pretty Polly Stakes. Her return to racing this season will be awaited by many to see if she can return to the ground running.

Toy, a three-year-old filly, has shown fairly good form with one first-place finish and two second-place finishes. However, Toy's most recent race in May was an anomaly with a final position of 11th out of 15 horses. The Pretty Polly Stakes will be the longest racetrack Toy will have entered, so it will be interesting to see if she can step up and get a podium finish.
