This is only Braga’s second appearance in the Champions League proper, with the team having been eliminated at the group stage back in 2012/13. Of course, this is also Union Berlin’s debut in Europe’s premier competition, but it has been a campaign to forget for the Bundesliga side after successive defeats against Real Madrid, Braga and Napoli in their first three Group C games.

Braga have only lost two out of their previous nine games in all competitions, while Napoli were the last team to defeat the Portuguese outfit other than Real Madrid (this game finished 2-1 to the Neapolitans on September 20th). Make no mistake; the side boasts both a potent attack (including the aforementioned Bruma) and marked defensive vulnerabilities, having scored 48 and conceded 30 goals in their 21 matches across all competitions this season. Ultimately, Braga’s matches in 2023/24 have yielded 78 goals at a rate of 3.71 per game, so their clash should with Union Berlins should be as entertaining as it is tense.

While midfielder Rani Khedira is serving a domestic suspension, he is available for the UCL clash with Braga in Portugal. However, midfielder András Schäfer remains a long-term absentee as he continues his recovery from foot surgery, while centre back Danilho Doekhi has a minor knock and may be unavailable for selection.
