Porto vs Inter Milan UEFA Champions League 2023

On Tuesday, 14th March, Inter Milan will travel to Porto’s fearsome Estádio do Dragão for the second leg of the UCL round of 16 clash between these two sides.

This tie remains one of the most evenly poised in the entire round of 16, with Inter having won the first leg 1-0 at the San Siro thanks to an 86th minute goal from substitute Romelu Lukaku.

In truth, there was little between the two team in Italy, and while Inter retained the bulk of possession and had more shots at goal, chances were few and far between throughout. In fact, Porto arguably had the better-quality chances in front of goal, with Zaidu Sanusi and Iranian striker Mehdi Taremi both going close with the score at 0-0.

But will Porto leverage home advantage to win the second leg, or can Inter hold firm and reach the quarterfinals for the first time since the 2010/11 campaign? I’ll offer my own Porto vs Inter 2nd leg prediction below, updated Champions League odds and looking at the latest team news and best value betting markets.

🏅 FC Porto Champions League Round of 16 Leg 2 Preview

unibet-champions-league-prediction-porto-vs-inter-promotional-banner

While Porto are currently eight points off top spot in the Primeira Liga, this has more to do with the relentless form of Benfica than their own shortcomings. Similarly, they have a game in hand on their bitter rivals, so still retain hopes of retaining the title they won so impressively in 2021/22.

Across all competitions, Porto have also won 76.92% of their matches so far in 2022/23, while they’ve already prevailed in two competitions in the form of the Taca de Liga (the Portuguese League Cup) and Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira.

However, the side’s Champions League form has been mixed, despite Porto qualifying from a tough group that also included Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen and Club Brugge. To this end, they lost their first two Group B matches against Atletico and Club Brugge respectively, with the latter thrashing Porto 4-0 at the Estádio do Dragão. However, they avenged this defeat when beating Brugge by the same margin in the return match, with this one of four straight victories that ultimately saw Sérgio Conceição’s men top the group.

In terms of absentees, Porto may still be without left winger Gabriel Veron for the second leg, as the Brazilian continues his recovery from an ankle injury. Forwards Evanilson and Galeno may also miss out with muscle injuries, but the side should be at relatively full strength by the time the second leg kicks off.

⚡ Inter Milan Champions League Round of 16 Leg 2 Preview

luckster-champions-league-prediction-porto-vs-inter-promotional-banner

Like Porto, Inter have already won a trophy in 2023, lifting the Supercoppa Italiana ahead of City rivals Milan in January. They also have a Coppa Italia semi-final to look forward to against Juventus, while their first leg win has put them in pole position to reach the last eight in the Champions League.

However, Inter’s pre-season hopes of winning Serie A appear to be all but over, as they remain 18 points behind runaway leaders Napoli with just 14 games to play. Their recent, 1-0 defeat to Bologna may have actually sounded the death knell for Inter’s Scudetto hopes, as this came less than 24 hours after Napoli had extended their lead by winning 2-0 at Empoli.

Inter can continue to seek solace in their European form, however, especially after the Nerazzurri were initially drawn into Champions League Group C alongside Bayern Munich and Barcelona. Despite losing twice to a dominant Bayern outfit in the aptly named ‘Group of Death’, Inter managed to beat Barca 1-0 at the San Siro, before holding the Catalans to a thrilling 3-3 in the Nou Camp and condemning Xavi’s men to the Europa League for the second consecutive campaign.

Left back Dalbert remains a long-term absentee for Inter, as he continues his arduous recovery from a cruciate ligament injury incurred during the pre-season. However, 28-year-old centre back Milan Škriniar should be fit again after suffering a back complaint that forced him out against Bologna, while Federico Dimarco is likely to return after reporting muscle fatigue following the first leg. Forward Joaquin Correra should also be fit after a hamstring strain, but doubts remain about whether he’ll be in contention to start in Portugal.

🆚 Porto vs Inter Milan Key Matchups

As with any football match at this level, the outcome will be heavily influenced by the individual battles that take place all over the park. Below, I’ll take a closer look at three of the most seminal duels and how they’re likely to impact the game.

1️⃣ Pepe vs Lautaro Martínez

The indefatigable Porto centre back Pepe actually turned 40 shortly after the first leg, but he shows no sign of slowing down despite his advancing years. He also coped admirably against Argentine livewire Lautaro Martinez in the first leg too, while substitute Romelu Lukaku also failed to get much change out of Pepe before his late winner.

Of course, it’s interesting to note that Inter play with an orthodox front two as part of their 3-5-2 formation, and I’d expect Lukaku to start ahead of Dzeko and partner Martinez in the second leg clash. This makes for an even pacier and more powerful strike force and one that was key in Inter’s title win in the 2020/21 campaign.

Pepe and centre back partner Iván Marcano will subsequently have their hands full in the home leg, especially as Martinez looks to isolate the Portuguese and target any space in behind the Porto defensive line.

The challenge for Porto is getting their defensive line right, especially as they look to chase the game and overturn the first leg deficit. However, the presence of Martinez in the final third will make this difficult, and Pepe will need all of his experience if Porto are to sustain attacks and nullify Inter’s threat.

2️⃣ Mehdi Taremi vs Milan Škriniar

Milan Škriniar remains Inter’s dominant centre half, so it was hugely concerning when he was withdrawn from the defensive line with nine minutes to play in the first leg.

Ultimately, Škriniar missed the subsequent Serie A defeat against Bologna with a back complaint, but he’s expected to be back and fully fit in time for the second leg.

Here, he’ll resume his duel with Porto’s Iranian forward Mehdi Taremi, with Škriniar largely coming out on top in the first leg. However, Taremi escaped the defender’s attentions when he drew a crucial save from André Onana with the score at 0-0.

Škriniar will look to dominate Taremi once again in the second leg, but the talented Iranian should enjoy slightly better service as Porto have more of the ball in front of their home fans and chase the game. One thing is for sure; Taremi will have to make the most of any space or chances he benefits from in the second leg, especially with Porto starting at a significant disadvantage.

3️⃣ Mateus Uribe vs Hakan Çalhanoğlu

The midfield battle was keenly contested in the first leg, with Inter playing three highly technical players in the middle of the park (namely Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Nicolò Barella and Henrikh Mkhitaryan).

This tactical ploy made it much easier to dominate possession, with Hakan Çalhanoğlu particularly influential in terms of dictating play and linking the midfield and attack.

This trend is likely to remain the same in the second leg, so Porto will need to be combative in the middle of the park if they’re to retain possession and stop Inter creating chances in transition. The experienced 31-year-old midfielder Mateus Uribe will be particularly important in this respect, as he looks to disrupt Inter’s passing game and make interceptions as high up the park as possible.

This will be a key battle in the midfield, and whoever emerges victorious will have a big say on the outcome and final result at the Estádio do Dragão.

📈 Porto vs Inter Milan Head-to-Head Statistics

Between them, Porto and Inter Milan have lifted 10 major European trophies, including three and two Champions League titles respectively. Both have lifted the coveted UCL crown since the turn of the century too, with Jose Mourinho overseeing both Porto’s triumph in 2004 and Inter’s subsequent success in 2010.

However, the two sides have only ever played five competitive matches against one another, including the recent first leg clash at the San Siro. The previous four all came in 2005 across the consecutive seasons, as they contested a two-legged round of 16 tie in 2004/05 and two group stage games during the following campaign.

The first match saw the sides share a 1-1 draw, before a superb Adriano hat trick helped Inter to a 3-1 win at the San Siro to propel the Serie A side to the 2004/05 quarterfinals. Porto earned their first win over Inter in their first group stage clash during the 2005/06 campaign, before heading back to the San Siro for the return match just one win later.

Here, Inter avenged this defeat with a narrow 2-1 win, which ultimately helped the Italian side to top the group and qualify for the round of 16. Conversely, Porto’s win over Inter was their sole triumph during the group stage, and they ultimately finished bottom of the group.

🏆 Porto vs Inter Milan Prediction – Who will Win?

palmslots-sports-champions-league-prediction-porto-vs-inter-promotional-banner

While Inter’s win in the first leg wasn’t quite as dominant as I’d expected, they did keep a clean sheet and retain a modicum of control throughout the game. This highlights Inter’s slight superiority over their opponents, particularly in the middle of the park and attacking third.

However, Porto have only lost twice at home this season, while the iconic Estádio do Dragão remains something of a fortress for the Portuguese side. This has to be factored into my Porto vs Inter prediction, with the game likely to be keenly contested and settled by the odd goal.

Inter will take solace from Club Brugge’s 4-0 win at the Estádio do Dragão on matchday two of the group stage, however, while the fact Porto have to chase the game will enable the Italians to ease into the match before looking to hit their opponents on the counterattack.

Inter also boast impressive options in attack, while Porto lack a genuinely prolific striker at the highest level. So, I’m opting for another Inter win in the second leg, while I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Simone Inzaghi’s men record another clean sheet.

🔍 Porto vs Inter Milan Betting Tips

With my prediction in mind, I’m also going to offer some Porto vs Inter tips with regards to the most lucrative betting markets. There are quite a few to choose from, but the below selections will hopefully help you to make the most of your bankroll.

1️⃣ Betting on There Being Under 2.5 Goals Scored at 1.90 with TonyBet Sports

Many of the betting markets for Porto vs Inter Milan are quite even, with no obvious favourite or consensus about how many goals are likely to be scored in the game.

However, I believe that Porto lack a consistent and reliable goal threat at the highest level, while Inter’s experienced defence and organised 3-5-2 shape enables them to deploy a compact back five as and when required during the game.

This will help given Porto’s need to chase the game at the Estádio do Dragão, while Inter’s first leg win also means that the side won’t look to adopt a particularly attack-minded approach unless the need arises.

So, I think there’s value in betting on their being under 2.5 goals scored in the game, with this outcome priced at 1.90 by TonyBet Sports.

2️⃣ Inter to Win 2 - 0 at 4.50 with Ladbrokes Sports

You can always unlock higher value wagers when combining match betting markets, and in this instance, I’d recommend backing Inter to win to nil in Portugal.

I successfully predicted that Inter would win without conceding during the first leg, and while this outcome is statistically less likely at the Estádio do Dragão, it does highlight Porto’s relative lack of firepower when playing their top European rivals.

Given that I also expect the away side to emerge victorious from the second leg, why not back Inter to win 2 - 0 at a market leading price of 4.50 with Ladbrokes Sports?

This offers a competitive return even when wagering with a nominal stake, which is to be recommended given the increased risk of combining different match betting markets.

3️⃣ Betting on Inter Milan to Win at 2.63 with TonyBet Sports

As I’ve already touched on, many of the Porto vs Inter betting markets are quite even, including the odds on which side will win the second leg. There’s certainly no short price favourite here, and while this suggests that it’s hard to pick a winner, it also means that you can unlock much higher returns with the right selection.

I also don’t think that the moneyline odds reflect Inter’s superiority, as despite this second leg clash and overall tie being relatively evenly matched, it’s hard to argue that the Serie A side have a slight edge over their opponents.

So, I’d recommend backing Inter to win the second leg at a price of 2.63 with TonyBet Sports, with this offering considerable value and potentially decent returns even with a nominal stake.

However, the odds may drift and shorten ahead of the second leg depending on each side’s respective form, so it may be better placing this wager sooner rather than later.

While this is likely to be a relatively tight and evenly contested game, I think Inter have a slight edge in terms of experience, midfield quality and attacking threat.
