Napoli vs Frankfurt UEFA Champions League 2023 Napoli vs Frankfurt UEFA Champions League 2023

On Wednesday, 15th March, Eintracht Frankfurt will travel to Italy for the decisive second leg of their round of 16 clash with Napoli.

Runaway Serie A leaders Napoli will be confident of reaching the quarterfinals having won the first leg 2-0 and largely dominated their opponents, while this would represent the first time ever that the side have reached the tournament’s last eight, it is in line with current UCL odds.

As for Frankfurt, they’ll aim to become just the second ever side to overturn a 2-0 home leg defeat in a UEFA Champions League tie, with Manchester United having achieved this unusual feat against PSG in the 2018/19 campaign.

So, will Napoli vs Frankfurt deliver another iconic UCL upset, or will the Serie A side progress serenely to the next round? Find out this and more in my detailed Napoli vs Frankfurt prediction and betting guide!

⚡ Napoli Champions League Round of 16 Leg 2 Preview

Let’s face facts; Napoli were utterly dominant during the first leg at Deutsche Bank Park, winning 2-0 and retaining 70% possession while having 18 shots on goal compared to just five from their rivals.

10 of these attempts were on target too, while Frankfurt was only able to test Napoli keeper Alex Meret once during the 90 minutes. Napoli were even able to miss a penalty early on, with talented Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia seeing his spot kick saved by Kevin Trapp before prolific striker Victor Osimhen put the Serie A side in front.

Giovanni di Lorenzo then doubled Napoli’s advantage just past the hour, seven minutes after Frankfurt’s young French striker Randal Kolo Muani was sent off for a shocking challenge on midfielder Frank Anguissa. Overall, it was an accomplished and controlled performance by Napoli, who have now won an impressive 26 of their 31 matches so far this term and sit a whopping 15 points clear at the top of Serie A.

Napoli are also be expected to be at close to full strength for the second leg, with no new injuries or suspensions reported after the clash in Frankfurt. In fact, Giacomo Raspadori remains the only likely absentee with a hamstring strain, as the second leg is likely to come a little too soon for the 23-year-old striker as he continues his recovery.

🏅 Eintracht Frankfurt Champions League Round of 16 Leg 2 Preview

Frankfurt were clearly second best in Germany, while their tame, 2-0 defeat to Napoli continued a run of relatively inconsistent form in all competitions.

While Oliver Glasner’s side recently reached the quarterfinals of the DFB-Pokal by beating Darmstadt 98 4-2, for example, a heavy 3-0 loss to 1. FC Köln also saw them slip to 6th in the Bundesliga and two points off the Champions League places.

Frankfurt’s inability to retain possession in the face of Napoli’s aggressive counter press also highlighted an ominous gulf between the two sides, and it’s hard to see much changing markedly before the second leg. However, Frankfurt have three Bundesliga games before the return match in Naples, and they’ll hope to build some form and momentum during this run.

As I’ve touched on, Frankfurt will be without Kolo Muani following his red card in the first leg, while Marcel Wenig, Jens Grahl and keeper Simon Simoni remain ineligible. Young striker Nacho Ferri is also sidelined with injury, while winger Junior Dina Ebimbe is expected to miss out with a syndesmotic ligament tear.

🆚 Napoli vs Eintracht Frankfurt Key Matchups

Even with this team news in mind, it’s still hard to create an accurate Napoli vs Frankfurt preview without knowing the exact lineups ahead of the second leg. However, I have a fairly good idea of how each side will line up in Naples, so here’s a detailed look at some of the key individual duels and matchups.

1️⃣ Victor Osimhen vs Kristijan Jakić

I highlighted Napoli’s explosive centre forward Victor Osimhen as a key threat ahead of the first leg, and the 24-year-old certainly lived up to this billing as he put Frankfurt to the sword with a devastating play.

In fact, he scored his 20th goal of the season just before half time, collecting Hirving Lozano’s superb pass before angling home a superb finish. This has taken his tally for 2022/23 to 20 goals in just 24 games across all competitions, while he now has 48 goals in 86 appearances for the club as a whole.

25-year-old centre back Kristijan Jakić certainly struggled to contain Osimhen, while Frankfurt’s three-man central defensive line was continuously isolated and pulled out of positions by the Nigerian’s movement and that of his teammates.

Jakić and his fellow defenders will certainly have to improve markedly in the second leg and be considerably more compact if they’re to have any chance of winning in Naples, never mind qualify from the round of 16 phase. As for Osimhen, he simply needs to maintain his rich vein of form, while leveraging his pace and movement to punish Frankfurt in transition and as they chase the game.

2️⃣ Khvicha Kvaratskhelia vs Aurélio Buta

Frankfurt deployed their preferred 3-4-2-1 system in the first leg, with this evolving into a more defensively oriented 5-4-1 formation when the side was out of possession. The plan here was clear; to use a back five to nullify the threat of Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in particular and deny Napoli space centrally before hitting them on the break.

However, the talented Kvaratskhelia is enjoying a stellar season, which has seen him contribute 12 goals and 15 assists in just 25 games so far this season. His partnership with Osimhen is also especially lethal, and it didn’t take long for the pair to start wreaking havoc on the Frankfurt defence.

Make no mistake; right back Aurélio Buta failed to deal with Kvaratskhelia’s direct running and dribbling throughout, while right-sided centre back Silva Melo also struggled to provide much support or secure the channel.

This is something that will have to change if Frankfurt are to stop Napoli’s prolific attack and effectively sustain any kind of possession at the other end, especially as Oliver Glasner doesn’t have the squad depth to make significant changes.

3️⃣ Zambo Anguissa vs Daichi Kamada

Frank Zambo Anguissa was highly effective in Napoli’s midfield in Germany, while he has been a reliable performer through the 2022/23 season so far. He’s also central to Napoli’s aggressive counter pressing game, which was in full force as Frankfurt barely got a kick during the first leg.

However, he was fortunate to escape injury after the reckless challenge that saw Frankfurt striker Kolo Muani dismissed, before being replaced Tanguy Ndombele with 10 minutes to go.

Due to Napoli’s dominance and high press, he also didn’t have too much defensive work to do, as Frankfurt’s attacking Japanese Daichi Kamada struggled to make an impact offensively. However, the 26-year-old retains a significant creative force and goal threat, contributing 13 goals in 30 games in all competitions this season so far.

Kamada will need to be on top form if Frankfurt to overcome Napoli in the second leg, while Zambo Anguissa will once again be looking to dominate his opponent and deny him time and space on the ball.

📈 Napoli vs Eintracht Frankfurt Head-to-Head Statistics

The first leg clash in Frankfurt was just the third competitive match between these two teams, while it also provided Napoli with their first win across all of these encounters.

The first such game saw Eintracht Frankfurt beat Napoli 1-0 It was Ghanian forward Tony Yeboah who scored the all-important winner for in Germany, before Frankfurt won by the same scoreline in the second leg in Naples.

Midfield player Ralf Falkenmayer got on the scoresheet in the second leg in Naples, as Frankfurt progressed to the quarterfinals and a match against Juventus (where the German side were ultimately eliminated).

Interestingly, the recent, first leg clash at Deutsche Bank Park was the first ever UCL match between the two sides. This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, of course, as despite reaching the showpiece occasion of the European Cup in 1960 (where they were famously beaten 7-3 by Real Madrid in Scotland), this is only Frankfurt’s second ever appearance at Europe’s top table.

🏆 Napoli vs Eintracht Frankfurt Prediction – Who will Win?

My Napoli vs Frankfurt 2nd leg prediction is relatively straightforward, as the hosts aim to reach the UCL quarterfinals for the first time and Frankfurt hope to achieve this objective for just the second time in their history.

While these Champions League novices may have relatively similar histories in the tournament, however, Napoli boasts a much stronger current playing squad and have been in irresistible form for much of the 2022/23 season.

Conversely, Eintracht Frankfurt have been mired in inconsistency and struggled for any kind of attacking fluency this season, and it should come as no surprise that they looked considerably inferior to Napoli in every department in the first leg.

It’s hard to see anything changing at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in the second leg, despite Frankfurt having to chase the game from the outset. In fact, this could create more chances for Napoli to score in transition, so I think the margin of victory could be slightly bigger for the Italian side in the second leg.

⚽ My Napoli vs Eintracht Frankfurt Prediction: Napoli to Win! Final Score: Napoli 3 🏆 Frankfurt 0

🔍 Napoli vs Eintracht Frankfurt Betting Tips

In terms of Napoli vs Frankfurt betting tips, I’m going to recommend straight away that you don’t place a straight ‘win’ bet on the home side to prevail. This simply doesn’t offer value for money, so you’re much better off exploring other match betting markets and potential combination wagers. Here are some markets that you may want to consider backing:

1️⃣ Both Sides Not to Score at 1.60 with William Hill Sports

Some of the betting markets associated with Napoli vs Frankfurt are quite even, making it hard to identify tangible value. For example, there are similar odds on both sides to score and not to score in the second leg, although Betinireland’s recommended bookies are edging towards the former outcome at present.

However, I think it will be hard for Frankfurt to score in Naples, despite the need for them to play on the front foot and chase the game.

After all, they’re much more comfortable as an aggressive counter attacking side, while the first leg saw them struggle to retain any kind of possession, let alone create chances in front of goal.

So, you may want to consider backing both sides not to score at 2.00 with TonyBet Sports, with this price likely to drift and shorten slightly ahead of the second leg on March 15th.

2️⃣ Under 2.5 goals at 2.10 with Unibet

I’ve plumped for a 3-0 Napoli win in the second leg, but I’m not completely convinced that the Serie A side will win by such a convincing margin.

This has more to do with the one-sided nature of the tie rather than Frankfurt’s potential threat, which has been significantly undermined by the suspension of French striker Kolo Muani.

Instead, Napoli’s superior quality and dominance could lead to a controlled second leg performance in which the home side play within themselves, especially if Frankfurt fail to offer any kind of threat from the outset.

In this case, Napoli may open up a one or two goal lead before taking their foot off the gas, allowing the tie to drift while saving players for upcoming matches. So, you may want to consider betting on there being under 2.5 goals at 2.10 with Unibet, either as an ante-post or in-play wager.

3️⃣ Napoli to Win 2-0 at 2.70 with BoyleSports

Even during the home leg, Eintracht Frankfurt could only muster 30% possession, five shots and a single goal attempt on target. In truth, they simply lacked the tools to even trouble the Napoli defence, as they struggled to get past the Serie A side’s aggressive press.

While they may have to play a more attacking game in Naples, it’s difficult to imagine them suddenly posing a significantly greater goal threat, especially in the absence of the pacy Kolo Muani.

Instead, I see Napoli being similarly dominant, so you may want to consider placing a combination match bet on them winning 2-0 in the second leg.

You can bet on this outcome at a price of 2.70 with BoyleSports, with this offering relative value (especially when compared to the current win or moneyline markets).

1️⃣ Napoli vs Eintracht Frankfurt Champions League Leg 2 – Who Will Win?

This is perhaps the easiest round of 16, second leg match to predict in this season’s UEFA Champions League, with Napoli proving to be far superior during the first leg at Deutsche Bank Park. The Italians should maintain a similar level of superiority at home in the second leg too, so I’m predicting another comfortable win for Napoli against Frankfurt.

2️⃣ What’s the best price for Napoli to beat Frankfurt?

While I wouldn’t recommend moneyline betting on Napoli to beat Frankfurt during the second leg (due to the relative lack of value in this market), you can wager on this outcome at a price of 1.60 with TonyBet Sports and Ladbrokes. If you do want to leverage these odds, I’d do it sooner rather than later as such prices are likely to drift further before the second leg gets underway.
