Manchester City’s round of 16 tie with Bundelisga side RB Leipzig is evenly poised following the first leg, with Pep Guardiola’s side held to a 1-1 draw after Joško Gvardiol’s second half header cancelled out Riyad Mahrez’s opener.
This was another frustrating night for the Citizens, who once again dominated possession at the Red Bull Arena but struggled to create genuine chances in front of goal.
As for Leipzig, their counter press became increasingly aggressive and effective as the game wore on, while they created several good opportunities to score before Gvardiol’s equalizer. Overall, the Bundesliga side were disciplined and well-organised, while they’ve given themselves an excellent chance of progressing to the quarterfinals.
So, will Man City vs RB Leipzig see the EPL side progress and underline their status as tournament favourites, or can the German side spring a surprise at the Etihad and beat the Champions League odds? Find out all this and more in my Man City vs RB Leipzig prediction below!

🏅 Man City Champions League Round of 16 Leg 2 Preview
If there’s one statistic that underlines the frustrating season that Manchester City have endured so far in 2022/23, it’s that they’ve failed to win more than three consecutive matches in defence of their Premier League title.
They’ve even drawn three of their seven UEFA Champions League games so far this season, with the tied match in Leipzig highlighting their ongoing failure to create chances in open play and get the most of their prolific striker Erling Haaland.
Certainly, Man City dominated possession throughout at the Red Bull Arena, with Jack Grealish providing a constant threat and outlet on the left-hand side. However, after Mahrez’s opener, the side became increasingly toothless as Leipzig gradually grew into the game, while Haaland had just seven touches of the ball in the first half with none of these coming in the opposition’s penalty box.
Pep Guardiola’s men will certainly need to improve and rediscover their cutting edge if they’re to reach the quarterfinals for the sixth consecutive season, but the good news is that they’ll have nearly a full squad to choose from for the second leg. Aside from long-term absentee Benjamin Mendy, John Stones is the only City player who may miss out at the Etihad Stadium, as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury.

Tweets by ChampionsLeague⚡ RB Leipzig Champions League Round of 16 Leg 2 Preview
This season’s Bundesliga is shaping up to be most keenly contested in years, with Union Berlin, Borussia Dortmund and defending champions Bayern Munich all level on 43 points at the top of the table.
Leipzig are only a point further back in fourth, and despite a relatively indifferent campaign by their own high standards, they remain in contention for a first ever Bundesliga title in 2022/23.
The team also have a DFB-Pokal quarterfinal against Borussia Dortmund to look forward too, while they’ll also fancy their chances of defeating City in Manchester. After all, they’ve already showcased resilience to reach the knockout stages of this season’s Champions League, losing their first two matches in Group F (including a 4-1 home defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk) before winning their final four games and even beating Real Madrid 3-2 at home to qualify.
Goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi remains a long-term absentee for Leipzig as he continues his rehabilitation from a cruciate ligament rupture. I also expect centre back Abdou Diallo to miss out with ongoing knee problems, while talented Spanish winger Dani Olmo may not have recovered in time from a torn muscle fibre. However, French forward Christopher Nkunku made his long-awaited return from injury in the first leg as a second half substitute, and he should be ready to start the second leg.

Tweets by ChampionsLeague🆚 Man City vs RB Leipzig Key Matchups
It can be hard to make an informed Man City vs Leipzig prediction without knowing the precise lineups for the second leg, but I have a relatively good idea of who’s likely to start at the Etihad Stadium. So, here’s a closer look at the seminal matchups and duels and how they’re likely to impact the outcome of the game.
1️⃣ Ruben Dias vs Andre Silva
Portuguese striker Andre Silva occasionally cut a frustrated figure during the first leg, as Leipzig struggled to deliver adequate service to the forward or sustain attacks during the first half.
However, his level of influence increased as Leipzig grew into the game, and he’ll be keen on sustaining this momentum while threatening the ample space in behind City’s defence at the Etihad Stadium.
Silva’s countryman Ruben Dias will be in the striker’s way when the second leg kicks off, while the defender will mostly likely look to dominate his opponent physically by getting tight and denying him the opportunity to spin in behind.
Manuel Akanji is a similarly strong and physically dominant defender, but City often deploy inverted full backs when in possession of the ball. So, Silva may find joy by spinning into the wide areas when in transition, especially if he receives support from his midfielders on the counterattack.
2️⃣ Erling Haaland vs Joško Gvardiol
Joško Gvardiol has emerged as one of the brightest defensive prospects in the world game, having wowed fans with a serious of superb performances as Croatia finished third in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
He was also impressive during the first leg of this UEFA Champions League tie, repelling numerous City attacks during the first half before popping up to score a crucial equalizer from Marcel Halstenberg’s set piece.
Once again, however, he will be tasked with stopping Erling Haaland at the Etihad Stadium, with the Norwegian boasting incredible strength and pace in behind alongside his tremendous goalscoring record.
Gvardiol will need support, of course, while he’ll also have to concentrate for the full 90 minutes to keep Haaland at bay. As for City, they’ll look to play off the front man and produce more runs in behind from midfield than they did during the first leg, as this will create more space for Haaland in and around the Leipzig penalty area.
3️⃣ Jack Grealish vs Benjamin Henrichs
When City were on top for the first 30 minutes during the first leg, this was mainly thanks to the quality of Jack Grealish. The tricky wide man arguably produced his best performance in a City shirt in Leipzig, constantly driving forward with the ball and tormenting makeshift right back Lukas Klostermann throughout.
Klostermann was replaced by Benjamin Henrichs at half time, and there’s no doubt he fared better against Grealish as Leipzig improved during the second half.
I’d expect Henrichs to return to the RB Leipzig starting 11 at the Etihad Stadium, while Grealish is also likely to play a key role given that he’s started 13 of City’s last 14 league games and provided four assists and two goals during this sequence.
Interestingly, Grealish has also completed more dribbles than any other City player this season, with his presence in the wide areas occupying defenders and creating space for his teammates. Similarly, Grealish has made the second highest number of key passes per 90 minutes among the City squad, and the team will need this type of vision and penetration if they’re to win in Manchester.
📈 Man City vs RB Leipzig Head-to-Head Statistics
RB Leipzig were founded relatively recently on May 19th, 2009, so it should come as no surprise that the side had only played Manchester City twice prior to the recent clash at the Red Bull Arena.
Both games were played during the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League campaign, with City and Leipzig drawn into Group A. The first match took place on September 15th, 2021, with City running riot at the Etihad Stadium as they won 6-3 in a thrilling game. Interestingly, eight of City’s starting 11 that day are still at the club, while many of these players will be expected to feature heavily in the second leg.
The second match occurred when City had already qualified from the group, and Guardiola’s men put in a sloppy performance as they were beaten 2-1 at the Red Bull Arena. Kyle Walker was also dismissed in the second half, needlessly kickout out at striker Andre Silva despite the match being a dead rubber.
Altogether, Man City and RB Leipzig have played each other three times, sharing one win apiece before the recent draw at the Red Bull Arena last week.
🏆 Man City vs RB Leipzig Prediction – Who will Win?
Most Man City vs RB Leipzig predictions are tipping the home side to win at the Etihad Stadium, and this makes perfect sense given the superior individual and collective quality throughout Pep Guardiola’s squad.
However, I think this will be a much closer game than the bookmaker odds suggest, with City struggling to string together consecutive wins in 2022/23 and consistently create chances for Erling Haaland. Although the team looked more like themselves in the recent 4-1 win at Bournemouth in the EPL, Leipzig will be encouraged that they can compete and may fancy their chances of upsetting the odds at the Etihad.
The Bundesliga side are also at their best when playing on the counterattack, so City’s possession-based philosophy and high defensive line is tailormade for the pace of movement of players like Silva and Timo Werner.
Despite this, City haven’t been eliminated from the Champions League at the round of 16 stage since Guardiola’s first season in 2016/17, and the squad’s experience (coupled with the individual brilliance of players like Grealish, De Bruyne and Haaland) should make the difference in the second leg. So, my Manchester City vs RB Leipzig prediction is that the Citizens will ultimately prevail, although I expect the Germans outfit to provide a consistent threat throughout.

🔍 Man City vs RB Leipzig Betting Tips
With my match prediction in mind, I thought I’d share some relevant Man City vs Leipzig betting tips too. These are based on the latest odds and some of the betting markets referenced earlier in the guide, and they can hopefully help you to make the most of your bankroll. Here are three Man City vs Leipzig tips to keep in mind.
1️⃣ Both Sides to Score at 1.81 with PalmSlots Sports
The bookies tend to agree that both sides are likely to score in the second leg at the Etihad Stadium, which is no surprise given the relative firepower that exists within both squads.
While you can find superior odds on both sides not to score in the second leg, there’s still some value to be uncovered when betting on the other side of this even money wager.
More specifically, Unibet are offering competitive odds of 1.81 that both sides will score at the Etihad. You could look to leverage this wager with a slightly higher stake too, as this will increase your potential returns in a short price market where the outcome is highly likely to occur.

2️⃣ Man City to Win and Both Sides to Score at 2.90 with William Hill
Given that I’m tipping to City to win and expecting both sides to score in the second leg, it also makes sense to combine these markets to create a higher value bet.
Currently, you can bet on Man City to win and both sides to score at a competitive price of 2.90 with William Hill Sports, and while the risk is slightly greater here due to the combination of two match outcomes in a single wager, the potential returns are also noticeably higher.
This also offers greater value as an ante-post rather than an in-play market, as the odds are likely to change and shorten quickly once the second leg kicks off.
3️⃣ Over 2.5 Goals Scored at 1.61 with PalmSlots Sports
If you’re looking for a relatively sure-fire bet that minimises your risk of loss, I’d recommend wagering on there being over 2.5 goals scored at a current price of 1.61 with PalmSlots Sports.
While these odds aren’t immediately eye catching, they’re relatively competitive when you consider the quality attacking players possessed by both sides, while an early goal in the second leg will immediately force their opponents to chase the game.
While no betting market or type of wager can be considered risk-free, the odds suggest that this is a relatively safe bet that once again offers superior value when placed prior to kick-off.

1️⃣ Man City vs RB Leipzig Champions League Leg 2 – Who Will Win?
Man City are the obvious favourites to win their second leg clash against RB Leipzig, and while the current odds don’t reflect the quality and threat that the visitors possess, I agree that Pep Guardiola’s men will prevail at the Etihad Stadium and in the tie as a whole. However, you won’t find much value when betting on City to win as they’re odds-on favourites with most sportsbooks.
2️⃣ What’s the best price for Man City to beat Leipzig?
To provide some context here, the best real-time price for Man City to beat Leipzig is 1.45 with PalmSlots Sports. This offers minimal value unless you’re betting with a significant stake, which increases your exposure to risk in the marketplace. Conversely, you can bet on Leipzig to win at 7.50 with Unibet, which may tempt some of you who want to wager with a nominal stake.

4️⃣ Will Man City or Leipzig Qualify for the UCL Quarterfinals?
Despite this round of 16 tie being evenly poised at 1-1 ahead of the second leg, Man City are heavy favourites to qualify for the quarterfinals at an average price of 1.17. Conversely, you can wager on RB Leipzig to qualify for the quarterfinals at average odds of 4.50, although some bookies are pricing this outcome as high as 4.80.
