Two of Europe’s biggest hitters will clash as part of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, 8th March, as PSG travel to Munich to contest the second leg of their round-of-16 tie. One will be eliminated! Bayern Munich vs PSG always makes for a compelling heavyweight clash, but this game will be even more seismic, given the German side’s convincing 1-0 win in Paris in the first leg. Make no mistake: PSG have a mountain to climb if they’re to overcome Bayern and avoid a second consecutive round-of-16 Champions League exit. Bayern are also unbeaten at home in all competitions this season, having not experienced defeat at the Allianz Arena since Borussia Mönchengladbach escaped with a 2-1 win on January 7th, 2022.

In this piece, I’ll take a closer look at the latest form and Champions League betting odds and offer my own Bayern Munich vs PSG 2nd leg prediction.

🏅 Bayern Munich Champions League Round of 16 Leg 2 Preview

In many ways, Bayern’s 1-0 win in Paris in the first leg simply reinforced the Bundesliga outfit’s current and historical dominance over their Ligue 1 rivals. Julian Nagelsmann’s team certainly controlled the game at the Parc des Princes, dominating the ball throughout and registering twice as many shots on goal as the hosts.

Interestingly, it was French winger Kingsley Coman who volleyed home the winner in Paris too, with the wide man also scoring the only goal when Bayern defeated PSG in 2019/20 UEFA Champions League final.

Bayern also appear to be returning to their best form as the 2022/23 campaign reaches fever pitch, despite a surprise 3-2 Bundesliga defeat to bogey team Borussia Monchengladbach last time out. Previously, Bayern had won four consecutive games in all competitions since February 1st, following a stuttering run of form that saw the team draw their first three Bundesliga games after the FIFA World Cup. For now, the team remains a point clear of Union Berlin at the top of the table, and well-placed to win an 11th successive Bundesliga title.

However, Bayern will be without a number of players when the second leg gets underway in just under three weeks’ time, including Benjamin Pavard who was dismissed in stoppage time of the win in Paris. Lucas Hernandez and Manuel Neuer remain long-term absentees with cruciate ligament damage and a leg fracture respectively, while striker Sadio Mane (leg) and Noussair Mazraoui (inflammation) could also miss out.

⚡ PSG Champions League Round of 16 Leg 2 Preview

PSG’s quest to win the UEFA Champions League grows increasingly desperate with every passing year, but the Parisian outfit’s chances of achieving this goal in 2022/23 appear to be more distant than ever. Of course, this is easy to say, given their first leg defeat to Bayern, but the side’s domestic form has also suffered significantly throughout 2023. Since January 1st, PSG have lost five out of nine matches in all competitions (including the defeat to Bayern), winning three and drawing once. This run has included domestic defeats to Lens, Rennes, Monaco and Marseille in the Coupe de France, while PSG have struggled to find fluency amid sporadic injuries to Neymar and the talismanic Kylian Mbappe.

PSG’s tactical confusion has also caused an issue for the side. Their sensational early season performances saw the side adopt a fluid 3-4-2-1 shape, which afforded Lionel Messi and Neymar freedom to roam behind the clinical Mbappe. However, coach Christophe Galtier has experimented with different systems since then, even switching to a more rigid 4-4-2 against Bayern.

Still, the arrival of Mbappe from the bench lifted PSG in the final stages of the first leg, and Galtier will be hoping the striker is fit enough to start at the Allianz Arena on March 8th. However, the side are likely to remain without defender, Nordi Mukiele and midfielder, Renato Sanches for the second leg, while marauding right back, Archraf Hakimi may miss out with a similar complaint, after leaving the field at half-time during the match in Paris.

🆚 Bayern Munich vs PSG Key Match-ups

Like most matches at this type of elite level, the final result will be influenced heavily by the various individual duels that take place all over the pitch. Below, I’ve identified three of the most seminal duels and how they’re likely to impact on the game in Germany.

1️⃣ Dayot Upamecano vs Kylian Mbappe

If Mbappe is fit to start at the Allianz Arena, he’ll pose a significant threat to Bayern’s notoriously high and aggressive defensive line.

This will prove particularly true if Bayern deploy the same 3-4-2-1 shape that they did in Paris, which could leave significant space in the wide areas for Mbappe to expose during transitions. Remember, Mbappe also has 25 goals in 27 appearances in all competitions this season, while he’s the joint Champions League top scorer in 2022/23 with seven goals in total.

The man most likely to track and trail Mbappe is Dayot Upamecano, who counts pace, athleticism and physical strength among his key skills. As a result, he’ll look to get tight to Mbappe and step in to steal the ball before it reaches the striker’s feet, while also being wary of the forward’s incredible pace in behind.

However, Upamecano likes to play as the central defender in a back three, so it will be interesting to see how Bayern cope with Mbappe drifts into the left channel (especially with Pavard suspended). Of course, much depends on how effective PSG are in possession and their ability to find Mbappe regularly in space.

2️⃣ Joao Cancelo vs Nuno Mendes

The loan signing of Joao Cancelo from Manchester City has been seen as a masterstroke by Bayern, especially when you consider the Portuguese player’s versatility and how this enables the Bundesliga side to play a number of different formations with relative ease. As if to underline his class, Cancelo delivered an assist within 20 minutes of his debut for the Bavarian side, although he was replaced by Alphonso Davies at half-time of the first leg in Paris (the Canadian substitute subsequently provided the assist for Coman’s decisive goal).

I’m expecting Cancelo to start on the right of midfield or as one of the back four in the return leg, especially with Pavard absent through suspension. This will see him go head-to-head with PSG’s talented young left back, Nuno Mendes, who also likes to play with attacking abandon and will be looking to exploit his opposite number’s perceived defensive vulnerabilities.

This could prove to be a key battle on the flanks, and one that could be complicated if Cancelo is also required to offer additional defensive cover when Mbappe drifts out wide to the left.

3️⃣ Eric Choupo-Moting vs Sergio Ramos

Munich’s nomadic striker, Eric Choupo-Moting has enjoyed an unusual career to date, representing Hamburger SV, FC Nurnberg, Mainz 05, Schalke and Stoke City before becoming a squad player for PSG and Bayern. The 33-year-old, however, who started the first leg in Paris in the continued absence of Sadio Mane, has enjoyed his best goal-scoring season since 2014/15 this term, registering 13 goals in just 22 appearances and scoring three in five UCL games.

I also expect him to start at the Allianz Arena, especially with Bayern likely to control possession high up the pitch and play off the experienced target man.

In his way will be former Real Madrid legend, Sergio Ramos, who remains an immensely physical player who will go toe-to-toe with Choupo-Moting. If the Spaniard is able to dominate his opponent, PSG may be able to prevent Bayern from sustaining attacks and optimise their own threat at the other end.

📈 Bayern Munich vs PSG Head-to-Head Statistics

Despite Bayern having won 10 major European trophies (including two Super Cups) to PSG’s one (the European Cup Winner Cup in 1996), these two sides now have an even head-to-head record in continental football.

More specifically, Bayern’s 1-0 win in Paris was their sixth victory out of 12 matches between the two sides, with PSG having prevailed on the other six occasions.

The most recent game also yielded the 31st goal scored in these 12 encounters, with Bayern having now plundered 16 to the 15 scored by PSG. These head-to-head stats would appear to highlight this as an evenly matched clash, but Bayern have won four of the last five encounters by an aggregate score of 7-5, including the final at the end of the 2019/20 campaign that saw Bayern win their sixth UCL crown. This run of H2H form also reaffirms Bayern’s status as favourites in the game and tie as a whole, as they look to record a seventh win against their Ligue 1 rivals.

🏆 Bayern Munich vs PSG Prediction – Who Will Win?

In truth, it’s hard to look beyond a Bayern win at the Allianz Arena. The Bundesliga leaders have been unbeaten in all competitions for more than a year, and they won comprehensively in the away leg in Paris, largely dominating possession while sustaining attacks and creating numerous chances. Bayern’s form has also picked up in February, while PSG have remained vulnerable and have lost five of their last nine matches. Although the prolific Mbappe may return for the Parisians and PSG may have a lot of chances to score in Germany, I’m backing Bayern to win the second leg and progress to the last eight.

As for my precise Bayern vs PSG prediction, I expect the home side to win 2-1 and condemn PSG to yet another year without success in Europe’s premier tournament.

🔍 Bayern Munich vs PSG Betting Tips

Now it’s time for my Bayern vs PSG tips, based on the available betting markets and very latest odds. Here are three betting tips to help you make the most of your bankroll.

1️⃣ Both Sides to Score at 1.57 with William Hill

I expected both sides to score in the first leg too, especially given the attacking quality of both teams. However, the potential return of Mbappe to the PSG starting 11 makes this outcome even more likely in Munich, with the French international blessed with the pace, movement and finishing ability to fully exploit Bayern’s occasionally vulnerable high line. I think we’ll see goals at both ends at the Allianz Arena, and you can wager on this outcome at a market high price of 1.57 with both PalmSlots Sports and William Hill.

2️⃣ Bayern Munich to Win and Both Sides to Score at 3.10 with William Hill

Combining match betting markets is an excellent way of increasingly your potential returns. I particularly like the idea of backing Bayern Munich to win the second leg and both sides to score. This is available at competitive odds of 3.10 at William Hill. As I’ve already touched on, there’s every chance that both sides will score in Germany, while Bayern are the favourites to win the second leg by virtue of having home advantage and their proven ability to dominate games at this level.

3️⃣ Over 2.5 Goals at 1.53 with TonyBet Sports

You may also want to consider betting on there being over 2.5 goals scored in the game. While there isn’t huge value to be found here - the sportsbooks seeming to agree about the respective firepowers of Bayern and PSG - you can get relatively competitive odds of 1.57 with TonyBet Sports and William Hill. Of course, you can increase your potential returns in this type of market by increasing your stake amount. Just remember to gamble responsibly at all times, and always be sure to wager within your means.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions about Bayern Munich vs PSG Prediction

To finish, I want to answer some of your most frequently asked questions about the upcoming game at the Allianz Arena.

1️⃣ Bayern Munich vs PSG Champions League Leg 2 – Who Will Win?

Given the quality and form of Bayern and their dominant performance in the first leg, I’m backing them to win again in Germany and book their passage into the UCL quarterfinals. I also expect both sides to score in what should be an entertaining game.

2️⃣ What’s the Best Price for Bayern Munich to Beat PSG?

If you agree with me that Bayern will beat PSG in Germany, you can bet on this at market-leading odds of 1.85 with Unibet. Conversely, PSG remain relative outsiders to win at the Allianz Arena, with both Ladbrokes and William Hill pricing this outcome at 4.00. This is largely due to the French side’s recent form, but this may be worth a small flutter when betting with a nominal stake amount.
