Bayern man city Bayern man city

While the Bayern vs Man City UCL quarterfinal clash looked like being one of the tightest and most keenly contested ties in the last eight of the 2023 Champions League, Pep Guardiola’s men made light work of their Bundesliga opponents with a superb 3-0 first leg win at the Etihad Stadium.

This means that the defending Premier League champions already have one foot in the semi-finals as they head to Germany for the return leg, which will take place at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday, 19th April.

However, Bayern were highly competitive during the first hour in Manchester, during which time they created a number of chances, resisted their opponents’ counter press effectively and only trailed to Rodri’s superb long-range strike. Then came a sloppy and error-strewn final 30 minutes, as poor defending allowed City to pepper the Bayern goal and treble their lead through Bernardo Silva and the relentless Erling Haaland.

So, the Bundesliga leaders retain an outside chance of reaching the quarterfinals, and City will need to guard against complacency in Munich. In this guide, I’ll look at the latest betting odds ahead of the second leg, before offering my own Bayern vs Man City prediction and in-depth preview!

The ante post Bayern Munich vs Man City odds make interesting reading ahead of the second leg, as while the Bavarians are narrow favourites to win in front of their own fans, City are unsurprisingly odds-on to reach the last four of the Champions League. 🏅 Bayern Munich Champions League Quarterfinal Leg 2 Preview

At the Etihad, Thomas Tuchel endured his second defeat in just four matches since taking over from the sacked Julian Nagelsmann, and there’s no doubt that Bayern are struggling to play with the intensity and consistency required to challenge for the top honours. Such struggles also underpinned Nagelsmann’s shock departure, and Tuchel will need to impart all of his renowned focus and tactical discipline if the Bavarians are to overturn their first leg deficit.

Of course, the former Chelsea coach has form in this respect, having come within a whisker of eliminating Real Madrid in last season’s UCL quarterfinal despite a 3-1 first leg defeat at Stamford Bridge. His side subsequently played superbly at the Santiago Bernabéu, roaring into a 3-0 lead with just 15 minutes to go before Los Blancos struck twice to reach the last four after extra-time.

Bayern certainly showed glimpses of a typical Tuchel team in Manchester, as they pressed aggressively early on and dominated possession in spells. They also created excellent chances for Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sane to get on the scoresheet, only to be let down by poor finishing and subsequent losses in concentration at the back. Incremental improvements at both ends of the pitch could make a big difference for Bayern in the second leg, although Tuchel only has a week to work his undoubted magic.

Starting Sadio Mane in attack may help Bayern’s cause, especially with the aggressive and clinical Senegal striker now fully fit after injury. Otherwise, Munich have a largely fully fit squad to choose from, with Manuel Neuer (broken leg) and Lucas Hernandez (cruciate ligament rupture) the only remaining senior absentees ahead of the second leg.

⚡ Man City Champions League Quarterfinal Leg 2 Preview

Despite a relatively inconsistent season by their own relentlessly high standards, Manchester City appear to be hitting top form as we enter the business end of the season. To this end, the club stretched its winning run in all competitions to nine matches with their 3-0 triumph over Bayern, with this sequence starting with an impressive 4-1 win at Bournemouth on 25th February.

Of course, the Citizens have form for embarking on extended winning runs at the most crucial times throughout Pep Guardiola’s reign, and this could prove crucial if the club is to pursue an historic treble and win the UEFA Champions League for the first ever time. City certainly impressed in the UCL quarterfinal first leg, with players like Jack Grealish, Rodri, Erling Haaland combining to deliver a high intensity performance that was laced with quality and controlled aggression.

City’s quarterfinal tie with Bayern is sandwiched by an EPL clash with struggling Leicester City at the Etihad Stadium, which may enable Guardiola to rotate some of his players at the weekend and keep them fresh for the second leg. However, the Spaniard will be wise to avoid making too many changes, especially with Grealish and Haaland playing with particular confidence and consistency at present.

One concern for City is that Kevin De Bruyne limped off in the second half of the first leg, after appearing to land awkwardly on his ankle. He will no doubt be assessed but could emerge as a doubt for the second leg, which could mean a return for Riyad Mahrez as the versatile Bernardo Silva moves inside. Otherwise, the only other absentee is left back Benjamin Mendy, who isn’t registered to play in Europe and will not feature in this season’s UCL.

🆚 Bayern Munich vs Man City Key Matchups

I would imagine that both sides will maintain largely the same starting eleven for the second leg, spare for one or two changes. So, here’s a look at three of the key Bayern Munich vs Man City duels that are likely to have a key bearing on the second leg and the tie as a whole.

1️⃣ Dayot Upamecano vs Erling Haaland

Erling Haaland remains a truly unique centre forward, whose levels of ruthlessness and efficiency in front of goal are off the chart. To this end, he now has a staggering 45 goals in just 39 appearances since joining City (including 11 in just seven UCL outings), while he has already broken a record for the number of goals scored in a single season by a Premier League player.

Against Bayern, he was as efficient as ever, assisting Bernardo Silva with a delightful cross and scoring City’s third despite having just 28 touches in the entire game. Make no mistake; Bayern cannot afford to switch off for a moment in the second leg, and it will once again fall on the shoulders of Frenchman Dayot Upamecano to keep the Norwegian quiet.

While Upamecano tracked Haaland fairly well for the first hour and was able to match him physically, a loss of focus and number of individual errors saw the Norwegian afforded much more space in the last 30 minutes. It was during this time that City made hay and took the game away from Bayern, with Haaland thriving as concentration levels dipped and spaces opened up all over the pitch.

This will once again be a key battle and one that Upamecano cannot fight alone, as he’ll need help from his teammates to ensure that Bayern remain compact and prevent Haaland from receiving the ball in space.

2️⃣ Joao Cancelo vs Jack Grealish

It was interesting to note that Tuchel left on-loan Manchester City full back Joao Cancelo on the bench at the Etihad, as he opted to play a highly structured 4-1-4-1 formation and selected the defensively superior Benjamin Pavard to operate at right back.

This will have been largely to counter the obvious threat of Manchester City winger Jack Grealish, who’s enjoying the best spell of his career and has made the left-sided attacking position his own in recent weeks. So far in 2022/23, Grealish has contributed five goals and nine assists in 39 appearances across all competitions, albeit only one of these goal involvements has come in the UCL.

However, Pavard endured a torrid time against Grealish, struggling to contain his influence on the left flank and resorting to making a number of fouls as he became increasingly frustrated. The former Villa man also tracked Pavard well when the Frenchman broke forward, showcasing an impressive work ethic and contributing to an excellent defensive effort throughout.

I’d expect Tuchel to replace Pavard with Cancelo in the second leg, particularly with Bayern needing to score three goals without reply just to level the tie. The question that remains is whether Cancelo can cope better with Grealish defensively, although the Portuguese may instead look to drive forward at every opportunity and push his opponent onto the back foot.

3️⃣ Sadio Mane vs Ruben Dias

Tuchel clearly wanted to use quick switches of play to create overloads in wide areas during the first leg, especially given the compact nature of Guardiola’s innovative 3-2-4-1 formation. Because of this, he selected two orthodox wingers in Kingsley Coman and former City man Leroy Sane, while deploying the pacy Serge Gnabry in a centre forward role.

However, Bayern lacked the presence of an out-and-out centre forward in Manchester, both in terms of their ability to consistently build attacks and their efficacy in front of goal. Leroy Sane was particularly wasteful in front of goal, so I’d expect former Liverpool forward Sadio Mane to start in the second leg.

Now recovered from injury, the first leg substitute will certainly improve the quality and intensity of Bayern’s press, which will be crucial as they look to force the pace. Secondly, Mane likes to play within the width of the 18-yard box and threaten in behind what is a typically high City defensive line, giving defenders like Nathan Ake and the superb Ruben Dias something different to think about.

Ultimately, Dias will need to marshal and organize City’s backline well to deal with the threat and pace of Mane, while John Stones will also have to track the Senegal striker when he drifts into the left channel. Dias’ pace and strength will also be key to nullifying the individual threat of Mane, who will be constantly on the move throughout the second leg.

📈 Bayern Munich vs Man City Head-to-Head Statistics

The first leg of the Bayern vs Man City quarterfinal clash saw these two sides meet for the seventh time in official UEFA competition, with the Premier League side claiming their fourth win to edge ahead in this burgeoning rivalry.

City also recorded the biggest even margin of victory in this particular head-to-head, meaning that they’ve now scored 12 times against Bayern in total while conceding just 10. City also recorded their third win in four home matches against Bayern Munich, although it should be noted that they’ve only won once on three previous trips to the Allianz Arena.

This particular statistic will give Bayern hope ahead of the second leg, although they’ll also need to record their biggest ever win against City if they’re to turn the tie in their favour.

Ultimately, there’s no doubt that the weight of history and previous results mean that Bayern will have their work cut out to qualify for the last four, even if they are able to win at the Allianz Arena and level the head-to-head record in the second leg.

🏆 Bayern Munich vs Man City Prediction – Who Will Win?

While I predicted that City would win the first leg at the Etihad, I didn’t imagine that they’d prevail by such a dominant margin. This had much to do with Bayern’s sloppiness and City’s increased dominance in the final 30 minutes, prior to which the two sides had been evenly matched and delivered the type of intense and close contest that fans had anticipated.

However, there’s no doubt that City’s 3-0 win has changed the entire complexion of the second leg, as it will require Bayern to attack aggressively from the first whistle and leave ample space in which the away side can counterattack.

This may well lead to an incredibly open and high scoring game, although it should be noted that Tuchel is more than capable of structuring his team so that they’re able to edge their way back into the tie. One thing is for sure; Bayern will need to be efficient in their attacking play and counter pressing if they’re to have any semblance of a chance, while they’ll also have to score first at the Allianz Arena.

Ultimately, my Bayern vs Man City quarters prediction is that the home side will compete aggressively from the outset and do enough to edge a high scoring game. However, this won’t be enough to overturn Bayern’s first leg deficit or stop City from reaching the last four once again.

My Prediction: ⚽ Bayern Munich 3 🏆 Man City 2 (Man City win 5-3 on Aggregate)

🔍 Bayern Munich vs Man City Betting Tips

Regardless of how the second leg unfolds, this will be a fascinating match to wager on, with so many potential outcomes and a huge number of betting markets. So, here are three Bayern vs Manchester City betting tips to help you make more informed second leg selections!

1️⃣ Bayern to Win and Both Sides Score at 4.00 with TonyBet Sports

Despite Bayern drawing a blank at the Etihad Stadium, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where both sides don’t create chances and get on the scoresheet in the second leg.

After all, Bayern will surely restore Sadio Mane to their starting lineup ahead of the second leg clash, while Tuchel will also set up his side to sustain attacks and apply constant pressure to their opponents.

As for City, they retain a potent attacking threat no matter who they play against, with the relentless Haaland being constantly supplied by creative players like Jack Grealish, Bernardo Silva and the brilliant Kevin De Bruyne. They should also have plenty of space in which to counterattack as Bayern chase the game, so I’d definitely expect both sides to score in Germany.

You can get on both sides to score and Bayern to win the second leg at a price of 4.00 with TonyBet Sports, which offers genuine value in the ante post marketplace.

2️⃣ Over 2.5 goals at 1.61 with TonyBet Sport

On a similar note, I fully expect there to be over 2.5 goals scored in the second leg between Bayern and Man City. Remember, Bayern have to score at least four goals to win the tie outright, forcing them to attack their opponents from the first whistle and invest a great deal of time and effort in scoring an early goal.

Of course, the 114 matches contested in the 2022/23 Champions League (including the first leg at the Etihad) have yielded 347 goals at a rate of 3.04 per game, so the weight of statistics also suggests that there will be more than 2.5 goals scored at the Allianz Arena.

Both teams also average more than 2.5 goals per game scored across all competitions this season, so I can’t see any realistic scenario where the Bayern vs Man City second leg clash doesn’t produce a high scoring match that’s packed full of chances.

While the best price you can get on this outcome is 1.61 with TonyBet Sports, you may want to consider increasing your stake slightly to pursue higher potential returns.

3️⃣ Bayern to Win 3-2 at 23.00 With William Hill

If you prefer to place small stake amounts or like outside bets, you may also want to consider betting on the exact score in the second leg between Bayern and Man City.

Of course, this is a relatively high-risk wager, but one that enables you to pursue a significant return even when staking a nominal amount.

For example, if you agree with me that Bayern are well placed to edge a high scoring contest 3-2 in Germany, you can bet on this outcome at a whopping 23.00 with William Hill at present. Even a €1 stake delivers a healthy payout in this instance, and it’s well worth a punt if you have enough money left in your bankroll.

Just remember that the risk of loss here is considerably higher, so you’ll need to focus on minimising the amount of money lost if the wager is unsuccessful!

🥇 Bayern Munich vs Man City Path to the Final

There’s no doubt that Man City have one foot in the semi-finals after their first leg dismantling of Bayern, with Pep Guardiola’s men scheduled to play either EPL rivals Chelsea or defending European champions Real Madrid in the last four if they complete the job at the Allianz Arena.

Of course, Chelsea stunned City under the stewardship of Thomas Tuchel in the 2021 final, winning 1-0 thanks to a first half Kai Havertz goal. Madrid also upset City in the 2021/22 semi-finals, as despite Guardiola’s men dominating much of the tie and leading 5-3 on aggregate entering stoppage time in the second leg, Los Blancos roused themselves to prevail 6-5 in extra-time.

Whoever prevails in the second leg in Germany, they’ll contest their semi-final tie with Madrid or Chelsea between May 9th and May 17th, with the winner progressing to the showpiece final on June 10th at Istanbul’s Ataturk Stadium.

Here, Bayern or City could face either Inter, Benfica, Napoli or AC Milan, and if Tuchel or Pep’s men do reach the final, they’ll surely be favourites to win the 2022/23 Champions League.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions About Bayern Munich vs Man City Prediction

If you’re still with me, you’ve nearly made it to the end of this comprehensive Bayern vs Man City prediction! To bring the guide to a close, however, I’m also going to answer a few of your most frequently asked questions.

1️⃣ Bayern vs Man City Munich Champions League Leg 2 – Who Will Win?

While City are overwhelming favourites to win this quarterfinal tie after their 3-0 win in the first leg, Bayern are the bookmakers’ tip to edge the second leg. However, there’s little between the ante post odds for both sides to win, and the return match could go either way depending on how effective Bayern are in sustaining attacks and restricting their opponents on the break.

2️⃣ What’s the best price for Bayern to Beat Man City?

If you do want to back Bayern to beat Manchester City in the second leg, TonyBet Sports is currently offering the best value odds a 2.57. Just remember that the ante post prices could shorten before the second leg kicks off, so you may want to wager on this outcome sooner rather than later.

3️⃣ Where Can I Watch Bayern Munich vs Man City?

There will be just eight days between the first and second legs of the tie between Bayern and Man City, with the latter taking place on Wednesday, April 19th at 20:00 GMT. BT Sport 1 will broadcast the action from the Allianz Arena to its Irish and UK customers, while you may also find that some sportsbooks are live streaming the game through their own platforms.

4️⃣ What are the Odds for Both Sides to Reach the UCL Semi-Finals?

Unsurprisingly, City’s three-goal advantage from the first leg makes them odds-on favourites to win the tie overall. In fact, they’re priced as short as 1.01 to win the tie and reach the UCL last four, while Bayern can be backed at a whopping 17.00 to qualify for the semi-finals. These odds reflect the challenge facing Bayern in the second leg, with just 11 teams having previously overturned a three-goal first leg deficit in all UEFA competition since the year 2000.
